| Deadmeat334404-21-06, 05:23 PM | K like, we have this arcane archer in our epic campaign (lvl 29) ranger/archer/fighter/oath bow Feats : weapon focus longbow, imp resice shot, imp manyshot, imp rapid shoy, storm of arrows, improved crit, ranged disarm, karmic strike, combat reflxes/expertise. He can somehow do a max damage of 2000. His bow does 1d8+ 3d10 (how?) +15. crit range 20 x3 + 2 d10 We are conviced that he is powergaming, as his charcter is servelry broekn compared to eveyone else in our campaign. |

He cannot be an arcane archer, because he has no arcane spellcasting class. I assume "oath bow" is as in he's wielding an oathbow, not that he has some unknown class named that. Simple math tells you there's no way he can even hope to approach 2000 damage. With Improved Rapid Shot, he gets at best 5 attacks per round. If by some miracle he rolls crits with all 5 attacks and maximum damage on every die, that's at most 595 damage: 8*3 + 30 + 15*3 + 20 = 119 per arrow. 119 * 5 arrows = 595. If your above numbers don't already take into account the bonuses of the oathbow, then that increases to: 8*4 + 30 + 15*4 + 20 + 12 = 154 per arrow. 142 * 5 arrows = 770. Again, this all assumes the near-impossibility of him critting each attack and rolling max damage. Highly unlikely. |
| runestar04-22-06, 12:29 AM | Are you sure you are using the right die for rolling damage? It's 1d8, not 10d80... ;) |
| Krug_the_smasher04-22-06, 12:34 AM | I think the character shoul get the old "battle mat over the head" because he is fooling you. There is no way to do that unless you take greater multishot, and are a gesalt ninja/rogue and the target(s) are flat-footed. So, tell him to re-calculate everything, and then get the DM to look over it. |
| Mitchell04-22-06, 01:24 AM | ...So, tell him to re-calculate everything, and then get the DM to look over it. Especially the part where they became an arcane archer without being able to cast arcane spells. :) Just ask them to explain how they do so much damage, and follow along with whatever books you need to so that you can see where they are messing up/cheating. I assume that you are the DM, and if not, then you should point this out to them. |
| draconic_swine04-22-06, 12:36 PM | Definitely make the player prove how he can deal so much damage. I also suggest instituting an "open character sheet" policy, at least between player and DM. A player who reveals his character sheet to no one is a recipe for cheating. The DM, at the very least, needs to be able to see the full character sheet to make sure everything is kosher. This should apply to everyone in a group. |
| Ash the blackcowl04-22-06, 01:47 PM | Actually, there is a non-WotC d20 product that introduces the Arcane Archer as a core 20 level progression class. So it is possible. |
| Lotus Crane04-22-06, 02:53 PM | Deadmeat has posted the same or similiar "questions" on the Prestige Classes (http://boards.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=626000), Skills and Feats (http://boards.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=626001), Equipment and Combat (http://boards.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=626002), and General (http://boards.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=626004) boards. He's definately spamming, and he may be committing a mild form of flaming, through asking a rhetorical/sarcastic/inane question about an impossible combination of feats, weapon properties, and PrCs (the character in question isn't even qualified for Arcane Archer). We should probably stop taking him seriously. On the 1% chance though that this is in fact a legitimate question about an actual campaign being played, some answers for Deadmeat: 1) Manyshot is a separate and unique standard action, not a regular attack, so a character can not make a full attack (with or without Rapid Shot) to make 4-7 manyshots, nor can he combine Manyshot with Storm of Arrows. That means that no, he cannot actually fire 16-42 arrows per round, only 4-7. 2) "Max damage" is less important than average damage; after all, the character has just as much of a chance of rolling minimum damage. In most cases, average damage is roughly a little above half of maximum damage. 3) Karmic Strike only works in melee, not ranged combat, so I don't even know why that's part of the build. 4) Assuming your question is real, this campaign is real, and another player is actually trying to play this character, he is not "powergaming," he is blatantly cheating and taking advantage of a DM who isn't reading and/or interpretting the rules correctly. "Powergaming" is a legitimate and normal process that we all do to a certain extent; that character simply isn't possible. 5) It's an epic game anyway, so it's probably a mistake to expect anything resembling balance. |
