When a caster creates a magical potion or elixer using the Bew Potion feat, are the effects of the spell it contains automatically maximized? For instance, if a cleric brews a cure light wounds potion, does it always cure 8+cleric's level HP's, or should you roll every time?

It's as the spell.... so yes you should roll 1d8...

And you should also know that the prices given in the DMG are for spell cast by the lower possible level of character for the spell (unless otherwise noted). So usually, potion of cure light wound heals 1d8+1 HP (since the caster must be at least lvl1 to cast the spell). If you have a cleric in your group that has the brew potion feat, i can create the potion at his level or lower. (but not lower than the minimum level required to cast the spell)

Nope. Drinking a potion or applying an oil has the effect of casting the spell. So you would still roll the d8 for the CLW potion. And you would roll at the time the potion is taken (not when its made).

Maximize is a +3 on the spell's slot. Potions can only hold 3rd level or lower, so it would be hard to make a potion of a maximized spell.

Metamagics can be applied to spells in magic items (PH pg 80) when the item is created. Assuming it was possible to maximize cure light wounds in a potion (which it's not, and wouldn't be worth doing if it was), then the potion would heal 13 every time it was used. 8 (maximize d8) + 5 (CL 7, max 5). It would cost 1400 gp (level 4 * CL 7 * 50). Considering that a CL 5 potion of cure serious wounds does 3d8 + 5 (average 17.5) and costs 750gp, you're not gaining much at all.

My gaming group has adapted the opinion that it is too time consuming to keep track of caster levels regarding most potions. For the purpose of Cure potions we houserule that the potion is maximized, but gains no benefit from caster level. Thus, a CLW potion always heals 8 points, a CMW heals 16 points, ect. Since it's likely for players to have potions from multiple sources, this houserule tends to eliminate headaches.

Its not a bad house rule, although it does tend to make potions slightly more powerful... Still, it does greatly simplify things, and it makes a bit more sense i think, somehow.

Hmm... I could always bottle and sell my Lay on Hands! High hp heal, low cost... only downside is the feeling of being touched whenever you drink it...

Wouldn't a potion of "lay on hands" fit better as an oil? "Boy, this lotion sure makes me feel better, and look, its stopped the bleeding!" :D

Though I would have thought a more consistent rule would be that all potions (and all items) are manufactured at minimum caster level unless otherwise specified. Curiously enough, this is the policy that the DMG uses for random potion generation (pg 229). Considering the cost increase of adding caster level, most crafters only craft at above minimum if there is a particular need.

If what you dislike is the randomness, then your method makes sense, though does increase potency slightly.

For comparison:Spell Min Cost Effect
CL Potion Wand Roll Avg Yours Diff
light 1 50gp 750gp d8+1 5.5 8 2.5
medium 3 300gp 4500gp 2d8+3 12 16 4
serious 5 750gp 11250gp 3d8+5 18.5 24 5.5
critical 7 1400gp 21000gp 4d8+7 25 32 7Note that potions of CCW are illegal.

As you can see, your method adds about 2 points per die (1 + 1.5 per die), which isn't really that much. The main difference is removing randomness.

Note that wands of CCW are illegal.

CRAFT WAND [ITEM CREATION]
Prerequisite: Caster level 5th.
Benefit: You can create a wand of any 4th-level or lower spell that you know.

Cure Critical Wounds
Conjuration (Healing)
Level: Brd 4, Clr 4, Drd 5, Healing 4
This spell functions like cure light wounds, except that it cures 4d8 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +20).

So unless you're a druid, you can craft a wand of CCW.

I'm wanting to know how you're bottling a supernatural ability, myself.

Maximize is a +3 on the spell's slot. Potions can only hold 3rd level or lower, so it would be hard to make a potion of a maximized spell.

Well, you could do a level 0 spell and maximize it. I'm not sure if there's any level 0 spell worth maximizing that can be put into a potion, but you could do it if you wanted to.

Haha, I'm not. It was just a crazy thought. If rules allowed it, I'd do it, sell it cheap, and use what funds I did get to build a temple of my deity in every major city... and some minor ones too!

I think I need to talk my DM (burningwizard) into houseruling the ability to bottle my ability into an oil. Celebril's Caress(as he called it). A sensual massage and the healings of a god, all in one easy to use bottle.

Celebril el'Tinuviel, servant of light, hand of justice, paladin of Bahamut.
