Are there any items that grant the wearer speed increase greater than +10 ft.? Boots of Striding and Springing (from the DMG) give only +10 ft. (and a +5 bonus to Jump checks) for 5,500 gp.

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

Boots of Speed, 12,000 gp
Horseshoes of Speed, 3,000 gp
Epic Boots of Swiftness, 256,000 gp
Epic Horseshoes of the Peerless Steed, 217,000 gp

Hmmm... although that wasn't exactly what I was looking for, it's still interesting. None of my characters ever used a mount, so I never bothered to look at any of the mount equipment.

So, we have Boots of Striding and Springing (+10 ft. enhancement bonus to speed, +5 competence bonus on Jump checks, all for 5,500 gp) and Horseshoes of Speed (+30 ft. enhancement for 3,000 gp).

What price would you assign to boots (or any other kind of footwear) that functioned just like the horseshoes of speed? Would 4,500 gp be a fair price (1,5 times that of the horseshoes)? Or is that too low? (I definitely wouldn't say it wa stoo much. :))

I believe if someone were to make Boots of Expeditious Retreat (1st level spell...+30 ft. spd.) that did not require activation (were always working) it would be the same price as boots of speed.

Boots of Speed would give you effects of haste (+30 spd., extra swing on a full attack, and bonus to AC) but only for 10 rounds a day.

Boots of Expeditious Retreat would give you a +30 to spd. all the time.

Boots of expeditious retreat are alot like the "ring of true striking"... sure, you're only mimicking a 1st level spell, but it's still a bit too good (+30 to speed all the time! geez!) to just follow the regular item creation prices.

Which is why you make them 12,000 gp, just like boots of speed. By the normal item creation rules, use activated boots of expeditious retreat cost 4,000 gp. Tripling the price is appropriate, IMO.

Incidentally, Boots of Expeditious Retreat also give you a +12 on Jump checks, according to the skill description. Striding and Springing give you +9, counting the boot bonus and the circumstance bonus (or competence, whatever it is) from the +10' speed.

Competence, I believe. And the total bonus to Jump nets to +11, if the creature is Small, and has a speed of 15 or 20 ft.

So, what about a theoretical pair of boots that gave +20 ft. enhancement bonus? How much would those cost?

"So, what about a theoretical pair of boots that gave +20 ft. enhancement bonus? How much would those cost?"

It's really very difficult to say, because the RaW carefully avoided creating any magic items that exceed +10', so we don't really have much to work from.

In the end it's up to your DM.

Two reasonable responses would be:

1) Four times as much as the boots of S&S. (Using the same "square the bonus" pricing that they use for ability scores and other similar effects.)

2) They don't cost anything, because they can't exist.

Well if you're going to price the 30' boots for 12,000 it would be logical to charge 8,000 since it's 2/3 the enhancement. That's like enhancing a weapon to +2. Seems alright to me, considering what you could spend it on instead.

Based on the charts, I'd be content to say that bonus^2*3000 GP would be the correct cost. 5500 GP (the cost of the Boots) minus the 2500 is 3k for +10 ft. Just treat every 10 ft as a +1, and it should be okay.

As such, +30 ft would cost 27,000, which seems about right for doubling the average being's speed all the time.

Now, before one asks "Why do the Horseshoes cost so much less then?" the answer would be that those only work for animals. Seeing as players are rarely animals, it got a big discount.

Yes, this does seem fair compared to the Boots of Speed's 12k cost. Why? Even though those do provide more bonuses (an extra attack, bonuses to attack rolls, AC, and reflex saves), those do last a mere 10 rounds a day! That's a single minute. Compare that to 1440 minutes (that's one full day) of +30 ft. Yes, you won't be moving all day, but the potential is still huge!

Yeah... don't forget that boots of speed are effectively a once per day item (one casting giving 10 rounds of overall use), while the boots you're making are use-activated (ie: continuous)... that's a factor of 5 in price right there...

boots of skating (from the XPH) give you +15 speed, and you move around on hover skates...kinda like rollerblades

you don't have to worry about grease or ice

plus, you go 2x that (+30) when going downhill.

i believe the enchantment is either negated, or total speed is halved when going UP a steep angle.

all this for 7k gp (and the assumption that psionics are in your game, and universal items are available for purchase)

Winged Mask (MoF) gives fly at will and costs 13,000 gp.
Wings of the Solar (?) (BoED) gives fly speed of 150 ft. and costs 100k+.

Boots of Speed (DMG) gives haste (+30 ft, extra attack, better ac) for 10 rounds and costs 12,000 gp.
Boots of Striding and Springing (DMG) gives +10 ft and costs 5,500 gp.

Based on above I think the minimum price should be 12,000 gp but I feel that even this is too little.

Not really. The Magic of Faerun (MoF) version of the Winged Mask gives 10 rounds of Fly per day. It's a standard action to activate.

There's a Web version of the Winged Mask which does give Fly at will, 36,000 gp.
