Longarms 01-18-07, 05:16 PM	The net seems like a decent weapon, but since it is made out of rope it has no hardness and hit points of only five. This makes the net extremely easy to just sunder, and as such is only a minor inconvenience (e.g. use your first attack to sunder the net and use remaining attacks on your opponent). Has anyone come across a book or supplement that has a more durable net? How about a chain net with appropriate hardness and hit points? Would it be unbalancing to give PCs or NPCs access to a chain net?
draconic_swine 01-18-07, 05:26 PM	One way to get better hp & hardness is to make the net magical. 10 hp and 2 hardness per bonus enhancement is nice, if expensive. As to whether or not it would be unbalancing to give PCs access to a chain, I don't think so. Just make sure any net-wielding enemies also have chain nets, and it should be fine.
tarkin 01-18-07, 05:36 PM	Also, you could make the nets out of silk rope instead of regular rope. Regular rope: 2 hitpoints, DC 23 to break Regular Net: 5 hitpoints, DC 25 to break. Silk rope: 4 hit points and DC 24 to break. At the very least, you should be able to make: Silk Net: 7 hitpoints, DC 26 to break But I personally would allow: Silk Net: 10 hitpoints, DC 27 to break.
Kresalak 01-18-07, 05:54 PM	Adamantine net. Also make it +1 flaming, so it deals damage and you can SA with it.
Mogofeiden 01-18-07, 05:59 PM	Escape Artist or bursting the net provokes an AoO. However, does sundering the net provoke an AoO? The net is all over the target the only thing the netter is holding is the trailling rope so, would this be considered sundering an unattended object (which does provoke an AoO)? If it is then you got yourself an AoO, if it isn't then just succeed at the opposed sunder check (the target gets a -2 on his roll). Well, you can always disarm the target before netting him.

It depends whether you consider a net whose trailing rope is being controlled to be "a carried or worn object" which "provokes an attack of opportunity just as attacking a held object does". I'm inclined to say no.

Centauri 01-19-07, 03:47 PM	Also, bear in mind that the DM is within his rights to rule that certain weapons have no effect on certain objects. I'd say that bludgeoning and piercing weapons would have little effect on a net. Of course, that doesn't help much against someone with a greatsword or an axe, but at least it's something. Also, even if he can get out of the net with his next attack, you can at least attack him with any remaining iterative attacks you might have. Consider taking the opportunity to Disarm or Sunder his weapon, since he's taking a -2 to attacks and -4 to Dex based attacks (-2 to attacks -4 to Dexterity). If you coordinate with them, the other members of your party can also take advantage of the enemy's reduced attack, armor class and reflex saves before he can cut his way out. Good luck.
