| daemionn03-13-08, 02:06 PM | Ok so my friend is going to be a warforged artificer and is wondering what the specs would be to create a cannon like weapon and graft it onto his arm. He said he would take a weapon prof feat so he could wield it proporly. The idea he wants is to launch alchemist items like alchemist fire, tanglefoot bags, and other alchemical goodies just like a grenade launcher. He is wondering what specs you would advise so its not too over powered. He was thinkinking a move action to reload it unless he got the rapid reload feat, and maybe 40ft regular range but no farther than that. He also want to have something like if he takes a move action to prop himself in a kneeling position he can extend the range on the weapon by 4X its regular range by doing a "mortar" shot. Its a fun idea just wondering how we are gonna make it work. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. |
| CryoSilver03-13-08, 02:13 PM | Well, what he's asking for is a weapon that basically grants him Far Shot * 4 for a limited selection of weapons, which isn't really so overpowered. In fact, IIRC, there's already a weapon out there that does just that. Note though, that tanglefoot bags are much heavier than alchemists fire or acid. Now, if this thing is grafted to his arm, does he keep or lose use of that hand for grasping things? Suggested stats: Exotic ranged, damage: special, range 30 feet, crit x2, weight - (graft). This weapon fires vials of alchemists fire or acid. Resolve the attack normally, as though it had been thrown. If the user kneels to fire, reduce all range penalties by 1 per range increment. Loading it is a move action. |
| daemionn03-13-08, 02:28 PM | Cool thanks for the ideas, also tanglefoot bags are heavier but would i be able to launch them somehow? like make a feat that lets me modify my cannon to fire them as well as alchemist fires? also he would lose the use of his hand only when he actualy fires the gun due to the blast causing to much recoil to grip anything etc. |
| CryoSilver03-13-08, 02:31 PM | If you want allow for the laucnhing of tangle foot bags, I suggest imposing a -4 penalty to the attack roll, or cutting the range by 10 feet. |
| daemionn03-13-08, 02:35 PM | sounds good, thanks for the help!:w00t: |
| ZiggZagg03-13-08, 02:38 PM | When Megaman meets D&D...LoL |
| daemionn03-13-08, 02:57 PM | Kinda but i wana use it more as a tactical weapon rather than for damage. if i wanted damage id jsut bend the rules and use a huge goliath great hammer with shock flaming and frost on it. On a side note if i enchant it with enhancments woudl they apply the buff to the projectiles i fire? |
| ZiggZagg03-13-08, 03:01 PM | Theoretically yes, since it says that bows (since this looks to be a modified bow), transfer their bonuses to their ammunition. I'm not sure of an official ruling for this, though. |
| _Chaz_03-13-08, 03:24 PM | Surely you could also load it with an orc shot put, or bolo aswell. That'd be win. |
| daemionn03-13-08, 03:32 PM | I realy want it to have the explosive or clouting abilities, clouting the most tho cuz the knockback and stun would be nice. |
| CryoSilver03-13-08, 04:21 PM | That'd be pretty cool; I just wouldn't use Flaming and Alchemists fire :P |
| Rymosrac03-13-08, 07:35 PM | Look up the spell "launch item" in the spell compendium. Thenfollow the guidelines for creating magic items in the DMG. He ought to be able to get a command-activated item of at-will launch object for about 900GP. Make it slotless (attached to the back of hise forearm or something, not occupying a magic item slot) for twice that. Ought to be about what he's looking for. |
| daemionn03-14-08, 09:15 PM | So The DM is actualy letting my friend make the cannon double barreled. Each barrel has to be enchanted on its own for the perpose of bestowing thier effect on the projectiles, and he said a range of 60 feet was good. He ruled that its a move action to load each barrel seperately but he can fire both in one standard action. Also for the mortar idea my DM said we can use a slightly modified version of the missed throwing weapon template. |
