Armor and Magic Item Slots [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-27-08, 08:00 PM I was just looking throught the PHB and noticed something for some reason that I had never thought of before. Certain armors come with gauntlets and/or helmets. Do these take up the item slot if you want a magic item that is not of the same type as the armor?

An example would be: If you have a chain shirt, it comes with a helmet. If you want to use Ioun Stones, can you use them without losing some part of the armor bonus or does the armor not work fully? (Like a -1 to AC) I can understand just replacing the helm with a magical helm, but Ioun Stones or Circlets don't usually provide head cover, and so I don't know if you could just "swap" the items out.

Same goes with armor that provides gauntlets; can you wear gloves and get the same armor bonuses from your armor? Do the gauntlets just disappear so to speak when you put on the gloves or do you sacrifice something when you aren't using gauntlets anymore?

Any thoughts/ideas?

02-27-08, 09:00 PM I don't usually use a helm on my characters (for get realism, faces are for the little kobold and goblins to see). And golves can have metal backings (Arthas from WCIII comes to mind).

02-28-08, 02:40 AM Actually, the DMG points out(page 217) that magic armous which include helmets, gauntlets, boots and the like have allowances for those items to be replaced by other magic items without harming or interfereing with the function of either item.

Additionally, Ioun stones are slotless items(despite orbiting the head) and will never interfere with a head-slot item just as a necklace of fireballs will never interefere with a neck slot item(aside from possibly incinerating it and you when you fail a save against a fire effect).

02-29-08, 01:03 AM I think wizards meant for boots, gloves, gauntlets, armbands, bracers, and helmets to be the ornamental part of a suit of armor. That way when you replace them the functionality of the armor dosent change.

02-29-08, 10:13 AM One of the reasons why I like the Gauntlet of Rust; you only need one of them for it to work, letting you wear a second gauntlet as a weapon. Yay.
