Armor destruction [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-01-07, 08:17 AM This pertains to not sundering or using a weapon to destroy armor. I'm talking about a physical act of strength of tearing apart a piece of armor.

How is this done? (if it can be)

ex. Can an Ogre take a Mithral Chain Shirt and physically tear it apart?

03-01-07, 09:22 AM With a Strength check, sure. I'm not sure what exactly the DC should be, but it'd be high - really high. If manacles (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/goodsAndServices.htm#manaclesandManacles Masterwork) require a DC 26 Strength check (DC 28 if they're masterwork), any metal armour should have, at the very least, a DC 30, and I'd add at least +10 to the DC for being made of mithral.

03-01-07, 10:56 AM because mithril is strong and theres more material to rend than in the instance of manacles. The manacles you merely have to snap a single link, a chain shirt has thousands.

03-01-07, 06:01 PM because so far my dm has claimed to have ripped 2 mithral chain shirts in half from one of my characters. I doesn't sound right though. To sunder it or to beat it to peices I'd be ok (not less annoyed) but it doesn't seem realistic that a n ogre could rip it apart seeing as theyre at most cr 7 or 8 (the parties lvl 4).

Especially if the STR dc is 30 or more as draconic swine stateed it may be

03-01-07, 06:12 PM The only creature that can do this kind of thing is the Bebilith with it's rend armour attack - is your DM basing things on this?

If the ogre can tear a chain shirt in half then it is probably better off just popping your head off :)

03-01-07, 07:04 PM nah, he hasnt dmed since AD&D so he does know all the rules so hes more so making **** up as he goes along. these arent house rules, hes just messing up when he does stuff and constantly screws with the pc`s

03-01-07, 07:05 PM It sounds like your DM is subtly (and as always, subtle means rampaging ogres) that he doesn't like you wearing mithril armors. Ask him about having a miraculous alteration in the laws of physics that makes mithril actually follow the rules in the DMG instead of the overpowered sourcebook/FAQ revision, which incidentally stops giants from tearing it apart.

The real question- why are you taking off all your clothes when you see ogres coming down the road? :embarrass

03-01-07, 07:33 PM nah the character was captured and they took all his gear. mithral is fine because there's already more power items in the game. He just likes messing with the PCs to give him more enjoyment more so than the players.

Whats the overpowerd sourcebook/FAQ revision? Where can I find it. Never heard of it before.
