| bondious01-19-07, 11:32 PM | Hello: Somewhere I think there is an ability that can be added to armor to lower its arcane spell failure chance by 10%...anyone know where that might be? Thanx, It's called Twilight, I know that for sure. As for where you can find it, I'm almost positive that you can find it in the 'Book of Exalted Deeds', and I THINK it's also in the PHB II. |
| Mitchell01-19-07, 11:35 PM | Yes, it is in the PHB II, and originally appeared in the BoED. |
| Avalongod01-19-07, 11:42 PM | Yes, thank you much, I just couldn't find it... |
| paladin201901-20-07, 12:11 AM | Does the nimbleness ability from Magic of Faerun help with spell failure? And mithral armor, but duh. |
| Avalongod01-20-07, 12:24 AM | Yes mithral reduces caster failure by 10%, so a mithral chain shirt with the twilight ability would have a caster failure rate of 0% |
| bondious01-20-07, 12:25 AM | Does the nimbleness ability from Magic of Faerun help with spell failure? Nah, Nimbleness only applies to max Dex and armor check. Yes mithral reduces caster failure by 10%, so a mithral chain shirt with the twilight ability would have a caster failure rate of 0% Yup! |
| Pivotal01-20-07, 11:16 AM | a +1 Twilight Mithril Chain shirt makes bracers of armor absolutely crap. It gives +5 ac and only costs 5400gp. And a +6 to ac then is only 9400gp, etc. Cheaper then bracers of armor for the same amount of ac by far. |
| paladin201901-20-07, 01:58 PM | What is this "mithril" of which you speak? It certainly isn't what is described by the D&D3.x rules for mithral. Start combining the effects of mithral and adamantine and that might be a start to adapting the Tolkien super-metal. a +1 twilight mithral shirt may make bracers of armor obsoloete, but what is the frequency of mithral in your campaign? |

Start combining the effects of mithral and adamantine and that might be a start to adapting the Tolkien super-metal. a +1 twilight mithral shirt may make bracers of armor obsoloete, but what is the frequency of mithral in your campaign? Indeed it is. Mithral is lighter and among other things grants a -10% to caster failure (look up the mithral chain shirt in the DMG). So, as the previous moster indicated, a mithral chain shirt +1 would grant +5 AC...add the twilight ability and the caster failure is 0%...good for wizards and sorcerers! Certainly a DM has the right to declare mithral non-existant in a campaign, although as the exotic materials go, mithral is probably as common as any of them. |
| paladin201901-20-07, 03:22 PM | That's my point. Mithral is an exotic material whereas bracers of armor don't have any material limitations. To say mithral is better without factoring in its implied rarity is an invalid comparison. I would prefer to look for bracers because I would be more likely to find them. |
| runestar01-20-07, 09:42 PM | Am I the only person who sees no problem with allowing +1twillight mithril chain shirt, despite knowing it is superior to bracers of armour in almost every aspect? It's like how the DVD player pretty much makes the VCR obselete. Advances in technology does that - Before the twillight armour property came out, it was common sense to rely on bracers of armour. Now that twillight has been discovered and its advantaged noted of, it would seem natural for every wizard with 2000+gp to spare to get one over bracers of armour.:) |
| paladin201901-20-07, 09:53 PM | Am I the only person who sees no problem with allowing +1twillight mithril chain shirt, despite knowing it is superior to bracers of armour in almost every aspect? No problem with the twilight quality applied to mithral shirts. I just think any statement that this is better than bracers must consider mithral's implied rarity. Now this mithril stuff...where did you find rules for that? |
| Lolipop_Knight01-20-07, 10:10 PM | It's in the DMG, page 284. If you're knocking the guy's spelling, quit it; using an "i" rather than an "a" is pretty tame, compared to the assaults on the English language that I've seen on these boards. |
| paladin201901-20-07, 10:14 PM | It's in the DMG, page 284. If you're knocking the guy's spelling, quit it; using an "i" rather than an "a" is pretty tame, compared to the assaults on the English language that I've seen on these boards. The point is that mithral is different than mithril. The first is in the DMG; the second is not only copyrighted by a certain litigious estate, but... It certainly isn't what is described by the D&D3.x rules for mithral. Start combining the effects of mithral and adamantine and that might be a start to adapting the Tolkien super-metal. |
| Avalongod01-20-07, 11:00 PM | Either way it's a minor issue of spelling...let it go...:P Although certainly mithral is rare, I would debate whether it's THAT rare that you wouldn't be able to find it if you had the gold. It's rarily is reflected in it's gold value. Think of it like diamonds (or gold itself for that matter)...it's considered rare, but if you got the $$$ you can get it. So unless your DM rules that it's simply so rare it's unheard of, it should be available. |
| Max the Immortal01-21-07, 01:38 AM | Other ways to reduce ASF: -The Feycraft armor template in the DMGII reduces an armor's ASF by 5%, but reduces the armor's durability somewhat. -Thistledown underpadding can reduce the ASF of some types of armor by 5%, but slightly increases its armor check penalty. As far as I know, both of these stack with one another and with mithral and twilight. The main problem is that Feycraft armor must be made by a fey creature (or at least, a fey creature must be involved in the creation), and thistledown is used primarily by halflings and elves. If I recall correctly, it's possible to make a mithral breastplate with 0% ASF if you use all four of these ASF-reducing options. |
| Vaalingrade Ashland01-21-07, 02:02 AM | Am I the only person who sees no problem with allowing +1twillight mithril chain shirt, despite knowing it is superior to bracers of armour in almost every aspect? No, but I also think ASF is a sick joke on the concept of game design. |
