| Zizak09-24-05, 01:18 PM | My (4th Ranger / 1st Bloodhound) has reached the point in the campaign where our characters have discovered the treasuretrove of magical items. To quote the DM: "Almost everything found in the DMG" (Our DM isnt really a stickler for the rules) It falls as our responsibility to equip ourselves and im wondering... what would you do? My character is going to be a bloodhound from now on so i need not worry about arcane spell failure rate. His primary attack is with his bow, having chose the archery weapon specializations. I want him to cripple them at range with archery, yet if forced to fight close range i want him to grapple, so i was considering Gloves of Titans grip instead of (dex). I had Tigerskin Armor as something i wanted but a friend said that would be pointless because of the chain (Max Dex) limitations. Im looking at Moon Ivy and I'd like to create my own armor, im confused on the limitations of armor creation... anyone know anything that would break it down for me easily? I was thinking "Moon Ivy of the Great Wolf" I want the ability to wild shape into a wolf but only a wolf just to keep it fair, with bonuses to str and grapple ; scent and claws on command like the Tigerskin. I want the wild shape to be at will, or function like a Phylactery of Change and for a descent duraition. Boots of Tracklessness allows pass without trace and an improved invis 3x / day. Amulet of Mighty Fists gives +5 dmg to natural weapons Bracers of Greater Archery +2 to attack with bow and +1 damage Gloves of Titans Grip would allow me a +8 to grapple checks for 7 rounds 3x / day. I dont know what do do about a belt, cloak or helm. I'm clueless on the belt, but i'd like to have cloak to have Hide and Move silently bonuses, maybe with greater shadow and greater silent moves? Is both on one item possible? Maybe a Phoenix Helm? Im going with the "Oathbow" because it fits perfectly with the bloodhound's mark ability, is it possible to have it mighty or keen? Maybe to add extra damage effects to it like by making it a force weapon? The Quiver of Ehlonna works unless you know of a better one. Anything else you could think that i left out? This campaign is reasonabli high magic so im thinking i have alot of room to play with, but i dont want to diminish the challenge of the game by overequipping myself, for instance, arrows that do more damage to undead would be usefull since they have the DR to piercing, yet an arrow of disentigration could just take all the enjoyment out of the combat. What would you do? You can use any magic items, combos, listed in all the 3.5 books and Arms & Equipment guide. Twink . |

| Zizak09-24-05, 01:28 PM | What do you mean since im not really playing D&D? I'm confused, just asking for clarification in a few areas in item creation and some recomendations. Im trying to learn all i can, im still kind of a noob about D&D. |
| bondious09-24-05, 01:33 PM | I think he means that since your character is only 5th level and he is going to have access to pretty much ANY item in the game they you might as well have been playing "D&D: the video game" on "god mode". It's not REALLY how the game was meant to be played, and takes much of the challenge away. :nonono: If I knew your DM, I'd point him/her in the direction of the "PC Wealth by Level" chart in the DMG...and help get your game on track. That's just my :twocents: , though... |
| Zizak09-24-05, 01:47 PM | I see, and i agree. Our DM plays high magic and creates some of his own magic items, comabt isnt really a main part of his campaigns so its never an overadvantage and there is always a challenge. So, if you wont help me pick items at least help me understand how i can create them. The rules are wishy washy or i just havent looked in the right section of my DMG yet. How does placing a spell in an item factor into its bonus? For example, i know that all shileds and armor can be enchanted up to a +10 right? and +5 being the max actual AC bonus you can get on top of Armor bonus. But if i did want to create a Moon Ivy that would allow me to wild shape wolf as in a phylactery of change, how would i co about translating that into bonus? How does Greater Silent Moves equal out? +3 +4 +5 +9? Is it based off of price? Rounded up or down? What about rings? Sorry im not here to defend my DM or to waste your time i really am trying to learn. |
| bondious09-24-05, 02:03 PM | Well, I don't have my DMG handy (got packed up because I'm moving soon), but I think I can help a little. Okay, here we go: Wild Shape Moon Ivy: take the cost of the Moon Ivy with whatever enhancement bonus you want. Example: say you want to have +5 Moon Ivy of Greater Silent Moves. You would take the cost of the Moon Ivy (16,000gp, I think) plus the cost of the enhcantment (25,000gp for a +5) plus the cost of the Silent Moves add-on (33,750gp), which would equal 74,750gp, correct? Then you would factor in the Phylactery of Change, 11,200gp, plus 50% (16,800gp), then add it to the total cost of the Moon Ivy...for a grand total of 91,550gp for +5 Moon Ivy of Greater Silent Moves and Changing. With this you would be able to wild shape like the Phylactery of Change allows, and the Greater Silent Moves would enable a +15 competence bonus to move silently. Silent Moves: This armor is well oiled and magically constructed so that it not only makes little sound, but it dampens sound around it. It provides a +5 competence bonus on its wearer’s Move Silently checks. (The armor’s armor check penalty still applies normally.) Faint illusion; CL 5th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, silence; Price +3,750 gp. Silent Moves, Improved: As silent moves, except it grants a +10 competence bonus on Move Silently checks. Moderate illusion; CL 10th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, silence; Price +15,000 gp. Silent Moves, Greater: As silent moves, except it grants a +15 competence bonus on Move Silently checks. Moderate illusion; CL 15th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, silence; Price +33,750 gp. Hope some of this helps. |
