| TrustTymora09-16-05, 06:32 PM | It appears that there is a contradiction between Armor Spikes decription in the PHB and the way the FAQ describes using them. The PHB states "extra" damage and the FAQ implies "in place of" damage. Thoughts? TT |
| Tony Vargas09-16-05, 07:08 PM | You're reading too much into the use of the word 'extra.' Extra doesn't have to mean 'in addition to,' it can also simply mean 'more than usual.' d6 is more than d3. The FAQ's conclusion is reasonable, the alternative is mildly imbalancing - though not so much so as some other things involving armor spikes... |
| TrustTymora09-16-05, 07:15 PM | Except for the fact that you don't normally do piercing damage so you are not doing "extra" damage in the context you present such as d6 instead of d3 since you never deal d3 piercing damage. As well if your a monk that does d10 damage, how extra is d6 instead of d10? TT |

'Extra' may have been a poor choice of words in the Armor Spike description, and there's a lot that /is/ wrong with armor spikes - but doing too little damage definitely isn't part of the problem, and the FAQ made a good call. |

That doesn't make any difference. "Piercing" is an adjective that describes the subject, the damage. I can say "Take a look at my new blue car", and you don't have to assume I therefore have more than the one new car; I may just be describing it. |

For 50.00 dollars more I'll give you an extra blue car. So you don't actually get two cars? You get a blue car that is "extra"! I'm not getting it. TT |
| tiluvias9909-17-05, 03:54 PM | saying the extra piercing damage from armor spikes replaces your grapple damage is like saying the extra 1d6 fire damage from the flaming enchantment replaces the weapon damage. Sure, 1d6 is "more than usual" if you are wielding a dagger, but it still doesn't replace the damage, it deals 1d4+1d6 fire. a grapple check with armor spikes likewise deals 1d3+1d6. |
| Raven Dark09-17-05, 05:03 PM | ...it deals 1d4+1d6 fire. a grapple check with armor spikes likewise deals 1d3+1d6. Well, it deals 1d3+1d6+strength mod anyways. Otherwsie, you're right. |
