Hi,

During our last game session the following question came up

Is it correct that you can keep your shield bonus to your AC while you are using a full round action to attack with both your regular hand ( saying a one-handed battleaxe) and with armorspikes as your off-hand weapon.?

I found nothing in the rules that would oppose this but wanted only to be shure I don't missed something in the RAW.

Thank you.

Yes. Aarmor spikes are on your armor not on your shield, and as you are not making a shield bash you do not loose your shield ac

On the other hand if you use a shield bash (with or without shieldspikes) without having improved shield bash then you would loose your shield bonus.

As per WoTC's rules, that is correct. (Note, some people may House Rule about this issue. It definitely rests on shaky grounds logic wise)

But remember, the choice is not a free-be.

You are giving up the Two handed attack with the weapon in your main hand.

This:

1) Reduces Strength and Power Attack damage modifiers.

2) Makes it easier to disarm or sunder you.

True, but if you were wanting to use a two-weapon fighting build, you wouldn't care about those points and you suddenly find your AC several points higher than originally planned; alternately, if you were planning on playing a sword-n-board character, your damage output has been modestly increased.

This is true on a technicallity, yes. But, do check with your DM, as he may choose to rule against it, anyway.

Any rules loophole that lets a comparatively cheap piece of normal equipment obviate a feat (in this case, it's Improved Shield Bash or Two-Weapon Defense), is probably worth closing. That is, if anyone tries to exploit it.

JMHO.

Thank you for the quick answers and in fact I'm the DM in our group and I wanted to confirm that by the RAW you can fight and use your shieldbonus in this way because it seemed to me to be a cheap posibility ( at no feat cost) to use an off-hand weapon .

If you are the DM and you think it is cheap, dissalow it.

Few games, if any, follow all of WoTC's rules.
