ok im wanting to make an enchancement to my armour which will bestow protection from "____" as in always on. problem is when i go by the formula in the book, the price tag comes out to a measly 2000 (1X1X2000)( or even 1400 if i take 30% off for being usable only by good charecters) is it just me or is that a little too good for that power, if so what would be a reasonable price? I brought it up with my DM but he wasn't too sure either.

I checked into this one reciently since a character is going to be taking CWI next level and plan on making broches for the party with prot from evil. (3.5 of course not sure if there's a diff in 3.0.)

The trick to Items with a constant effect is the 2,000gp (x spell level x caster level) mark you noticed but double check it. It's got the #2 asteriks, down below the chart is where the variables come into play and basically it works like this.

2,000gp x spell duration

rounds are x4
minutes are x2
10 minutes are x1.5
and 24hrs or greater are x0.5
(everything between is x1 of course)

So Pro from "whatever" is in minutes making it a 4,000gp effect for continuous use.

You also have to calculate the +2 deflection bonus, immunity to mind-effecting influences, and the +2 resistance to saves vs. evil sources. Since they are only against evil creatures I would half the total price.

+2 Deflection Bonus 8K
+2 Resistance 4K
Immunity to mind-effecting influances. Thru the Pro from Evil Spell 4K
And Let's not forget the warding of summoned creatures effect. 4K

That's 20K!

When you break down the parts and purchase them individually rather than as a complete spell effect it multiplies the cost by 5?! Something is very wrong with that.

That's Kinda like buying a car from a chop shop! The whole point there is that the individual parts of something usually have more value than the item as a whole. I sure hope I'm missing something.

The answer is simple:

The first set of posters do not know how to price magic items.

The rules for Armor benefits and for save bonus Supersede the spell level rules.

In fact, EVERYTHING supersedes the spell level rules - you are not supposed to use it unless you have no other way at all (not even comparing it to similar items such as the ring of regeneration) works.

This rule is the same one that prevents the following munchkin abuses from being legal:

Ring of True Strike Cost = 2,000 gp, benefit = +20 to hit all the time

Ring of Mage Armor Cost = 2,000 gp, benefit = +4 Mage armor (similar to the 16,000 gp bracers of armor +4.)

Ring of Cure minor wounds always on. Cost = 1,000 gp, heals at 1 pt/round. (compare with ring of regeneration which does far less than 1 pt/minute at 90,000 gp)

No, these are not legal.

And your Protection from evil abuse is not legal either.

P.S. The 30% off rule is another abuse. It was supposed to be used by DM's to grant powerfull items as treasure that players can't sell for much cash, but players always try to abuse it by making things that only they can use. It should only reduce the price you get when SELLING the item, not the price it costs to make the item.

P.P.S. Yes, the DMG is not very clear about any of the above, but those are the rules.
