Hi, I was reading through the magic items section of the v3.0 book: Arms and Equipment Guide. When I was reading through they talked about weapons as being a +2 weapon.
Example:
Staff of Discipline pg. 118
"This +2 lawful quarterstaff..."
Can anyone tell me what the +2 means...thanks

Well, if i am not mistaken, "Lawful" weapons have been changed to "Axiomatic" from the change of 3.0 ot 3.5 edition. The A&EG coming out before the 3.5 books, it still used 3.0 syntax.

Like "Holy", its a +2 weapon enchantment that you can put on a weapon that does a few things. It adds +2d6 damage vs. chaotic beings, AND any chaotic being holding it take a few negative levels as long as they hold it. Also, I believe it bypasses any DR/lawful that a creature might have (not many).

So yep... there it is. Hope that helps

so if a regular 1/4 staff does 1d6
then a +2 1/4staff
does...2d6
likewise a +3, 3d6
so on and so forth?

You know, if I answer this question straight up, you will never read so much as a word of the rules.
Look through this. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicWeapons.htm)
Being lazy isn't a medical condition. Get over it.

it is a +2 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls with the weapon, see chapter 7 of the Dungeon Master's Guide under Weapons

A +1 weapon adds one to the roll you make to see if you hit something, and then if you do hit it, adds one damage to whatever you would normally do.
A +2 weapon adds two to your attack roll and damage, and so on.

The lawful (axiomatic) enhancement just adds another 2d6 on top, as long as you're attacking a chaotic creature. Your DM can tell you whether or not this extra damage applies.

So a +2 quarterstaff would do 1d6 + 2 damage. A +2 axiomatic quarterstaff would also do 1d6 + 2 damage, unless you're fighting a chaotic creature. Then it does 1d6 + 2 + 2d6 damage.

Your best bet right now is probably to get your hands on a copy of the Player's Guide and sit down with it for a weekend. Peer through it. Read everything before the spells section. You don't have to do it in order, but at least glance at it all. Go over the combat section two or three times until you think it starts making sense. After you understand the basics of how "I hit him, he hits me" works, start studying the spell section and see how things can get really complicated.
