| rostos09-22-06, 05:21 AM | I'm just starting a new campaign. It'll be a tenth level party with a human bard, half celestial cleric, a barbarian and a VoP monk The barbarian's player wanted his character to be a pirate, mainly through roleplay (he's going pure barb.) I suggested he'd take a magical wooden leg. We discussed a few magical properties such a leg may have, such as - ranks in balance (iirc 5 lets you walk on half speed on a difficult surface ie. a boat?) - 5 foot(?) extra speed (goes nicely with the barb. speed increase) - otto's irrisistable dance. This one was suggested by the player. He wanted to be able to kick his opponent (a number of times per day, of course) to cast Otto's Dance. I personally think this is a wonderfully original idea, and I'd love to see it in play. The campaign is high magic, so a wooden leg that would work as well as or better than a normal leg isn't very strange. Would you consider this balanced? which suggestions would work best? have any of you tried something similar? thanks R. |
| Dunamin09-22-06, 05:54 AM | It's a nice original idea, I say go for it! I favor the last trait, it has more style to it, but other traits could be added as well. I'm not really keen on a bonus to Balance, in fact if the wooden leg you had in mind should capture pirate flavor, I would rather make it a penalty (of course, with magic anything is possibly, but hey). How about that as a trade-off, a penalty to Balance, but beneficial traits in other areas? The penalty would lower pricing, of course, when you begin to estimate it. Would you consider this balanced? If properly priced, yes. Make sure to remind the player of buying lots of rum! |
| Oompa09-22-06, 09:40 AM | What you could do is make the wooden leg a kind of staff.. that you can change with other staffs with different spells.. To even it out give him a minus on balance checks but let his speed be normal.. he can walk and run like normal but on slippery or weird surfaces he would have less holding.. |
| Dunamin09-22-06, 09:50 AM | What you could do is make the wooden leg a kind of staff.. that you can change with other staffs with different spells.. He's still a barbarian. It's nice to be able to cause a few spell-like effects, but I wouldn't put this much emphasis on spells. |

True.. forgot the true barbarian :) think about this.. a wooden leg with a spike on it :) that would be painfull if you got kicked in the balls :) |
| Dunamin09-22-06, 10:05 AM | And cause your wooden leg to stick to shipdeck and other things! But hey, we can work with that idea. Perhaps he can have a custom made mechanic that makes a few short spikes or blades protrude or detract from the side of the leg. Perhaps even make him able to shoot out the end of his leg as a spiked ball or some such, possibly attached through a chain. You know, think a secret-agent-grappling-hook-kinda-mechanic. |
| HomerJaySimpson1309-22-06, 10:13 AM | one word Warp Wood, ok it was two but hey what you can you do:D |
| Dunamin09-22-06, 10:35 AM | He could make it metal. Or perhaps a durable workable bone material from an exotic beast. That would also dissuade use of Repel Wood and Repel Metal or Stone (picture that barbarian being flung over the shipdeck, pulled by his leg :mymy: ). |
| rostos09-22-06, 06:57 PM | wow, lot's of replies, thanks:) I've heard some very interesting weapon'esque ideas from people, like Oompa's staff-leg combo. I'm not in favor of a balance penalty (what pirate would pay so much money for a leg that would make him fall over more?) and the grappling hook on a stick idea is kinda cool...but I don't really see any character tossing a rope with his leg. How would he hoist himself up?:P I'm currently thinking - Otto's irrististable dance 3 times a day - 5 points extra speed WOuld you considir it balanced? what would be the price tag? |
| __DnD4Life__09-22-06, 09:27 PM | How about the wooden leg casts Stun 3/day when he kicks them? Then imagine it being spiked. That would be awesome. As for price, I belive speed bonus is Bonus˛x1000gp. So, that would be 25000GP. The spell 3/day would be 8*15*2000*(3/5)=144000GP. It is a level 8 spell, so it is quite expensive. This totals to 169000GP. I hope he is a high level, cause that is quite a bit of money. |

That, and the player is very psyched up on the idea of otto's dance ('t was his idea). so a times a day otto's dance and a perm. 5 foot speed bonus would be 25K + 3*10*2000 = 205K? edit: and 5ft increased speed + otto once a day= 45K? |
| Thiez09-23-06, 08:12 AM | Horseshoes of Speed These iron shoes come in sets of four like ordinary horseshoes. When affixed to an animal’s hooves, they increase the animal’s base land speed by 30 feet; this counts as an enhancement bonus. As with other effects that increase speed, jumping distances increase proportionally. All four shoes must be worn by the same animal for the magic to be effective. Faint transmutation; CL 3rd; Craft Wondrous Item, haste; Price 3,000 gp;Weight 12 lb. (for four). I don't think a +5 increase in speed should cost more than 3k, if you could get a speed of 35 ft. on a toad (base speed 5 ft.) for a mere 3k. And check this out: Boots of Striding and Springing These boots increase the wearer’s base land speed by 10 feet. In addition to this striding ability (considered an enhancement bonus), these boots allow the wearer to make great leaps. She can jump with a +5 competence bonus on Jump checks. Faint transmutation; CL 3rd; Craft Wondrous Item, longstrider, creator must have 5 ranks in the Jump skill; Price 5,500 gp; Weight 1 lb. +5 competence on jump checks costs 2.5k (IIRC), so +10 ft. speed costs 3k for normal shoes. +5 in balance bonus? Well, that's nice. We'll juse the boots above, remove the +5 jump, and add the +5 balance. Tatam, your leg costs 5.5k (assuming it takes up some kind of body slot. I think making this player lose the ability to wear shoes and boots would make sense, to we can pretend the wooden leg takes up that space). Now, because pirates are cool, we'll say his leg is a +1 weapon that deals damage as a club (1d6, critical x2). The Otto's Irrisistable Dance ability should cost quite a lot... Use-activated or continuous Spell level × caster level × 2,000 gp = 8 * 15 * 2000 = 240.000. Now the charges: 240.000 / (5 / 3) = 144.000 gp Damn, that's one expensive leg. |
| rostos09-23-06, 09:13 AM | Thiez, you have earned 5 respect points^^ I'm going to propose the player to take the +5 to balance, +30 feet speed, or a combination of the 2 for 11K any objections/suggestions? |
| Thiez09-23-06, 09:29 AM | I dunno. I don't know what the real formula is for pricing enhancement bonus to speed, but +30 speed for 11k seems a bit much (even if a mount could get that bonus for a mere 3k). Thing is, I don't think +30ft. is stylish for this wooden leg. +5 ft. or +10 ft. are kind of cool. +30 ft. would just make this wooden leg into another staff of the munchkin :). |

I agree that isn't realistic, but it's not very gamebreaking and the players enjoy it. Not too much harm done, right? edit: he can REALLY out run a cheaatah! cheatah speed is 50, he has 70 (30+30 enhancement, +10 from barb. class) |
| Dunamin09-23-06, 12:43 PM | he can REALLY out run a cheaatah! cheatah speed is 50, he has 70 (30+30 enhancement, +10 from barb. class) Now I have this picture in my mind with a cheetah running across the plains, when slowly a pirate with wooden leg and all comes into view, eventually cathing up and finally running ahead of the cheetah... |
| rostos09-23-06, 01:17 PM | Now I have this picture in my mind with a cheetah running across the plains, when slowly a pirate with wooden leg and all comes into view, eventually cathing up and finally running ahead of the cheetah... RTFB! barbarians don't run past cheetahs! they smack'm in the head with an axe and eat them. But only if he ate all the halflings and/or babies |
| Fireclave09-23-06, 02:00 PM | Now I have this picture in my mind with a cheetah running across the plains, when slowly a pirate with wooden leg and all comes into view, eventually cathing up and finally running ahead of the cheetah... Arrrr...What a pirate won't do for rum ;) |
| __DnD4Life__09-23-06, 03:30 PM | thaks for the maths;) The stun is a bit too expensive (10th level). That spell 3/day WAS Otto's irresistable dance. I didnt price out the stun though. Thanks for pointing out those boots, Thiez. I totally missed them. So, 11k sounds like a good price for these. The stun feature that I mentioned will be based off of the Psionic power Energy Stun. For a standard action activation, it would cost about 7200GP. You get 1d6 of energy damage,(fort half) plus stun for one round(will neg). If he wants a swift action activation, I would suggest about 10k. So, a wooden leg with a +30 enhancement bonus to speed, a +5 bonus to balance, and stun 3/day swift action would cost 21,000GP. NOTE: The speed bonus is priced as an enhancement bonus, and will not stack with his barbarian fast movement. Considering that enhancement bonuses to ability scores are half of other bonuses, I would price the speed bonus at twice what we have. So, 14000GP for speed and balance, plus 10k for the stun (if you want it.) |
