| Haun77705-25-07, 04:44 PM | Hello! I was trying to think of really cool arrows from books for my next character can you tell me of any you can think of off the top of your head? Then I was thinking it would be fun if you guys had any ideas of your own that you think would be cool arrows, and we can make the stats for them and it’ll be fun lol … Thanks in advance guys and gals! |
| ishpu05-25-07, 04:59 PM | burrowing arrow... this functions as a normal arrow until it hits its target, arms come out the sides of the shaft attactching to the victim and pulling the head into the victim dealing one constitution damage per round left in... once pulled out it deals one point of damage until the bleeding is stopped with a heal check dc 15 |
| Haun77705-25-07, 06:17 PM | Is that in a book or is this your idea? because I like it thanks man! |
| tyrecian05-25-07, 06:34 PM | i like to throw in "barbed" arrows. They cost the same as Masterwork, but deal 1 damage instead of the to hit improvement. Helps early archers build that damage without having to shell out for a magical bow or strength bow before they are ready. I also allow it to stack with magical damage from bow or arrow and strength. The +1 isnt the end all be all, it has been helpful to have that stacking to make the archers feel better about Bows. Noone ever uses Xbows in my games, but i would allow it for them as well. |
| RikuKupo05-25-07, 08:58 PM | Well there are the arrows in RoW, the blunt ones and the ones that catch on fire are favorites of mine. I remember the ones in the AaEG were pretty cool, but I can't think of what they were off the top of my head. I have an idea for a new type (inspired by one of the greatest stealth video games of all time: Thief) Moss arrows. You shoot them at the ground and a patch of moss appears, making it easier to move quietly. |
| Sleepwalker1366605-25-07, 09:03 PM | Hooked arrows, got the idea from the harpoon, basically while the arrows are imbedded in you, you suffer a -1 to att and Ac and removing the arrow deals 1d4 damage unless you succeed a heal check Dc 15, regardless of how the arrow is removed it is a full round action. |
| John_of_Ark05-26-07, 01:17 AM | Any of the arrows from Thief. Arrows that make noise would be cool if your character ever does anything stealthy. Either have something that made noise when it hit something or make it whistle as it flies through the air. Also, the rope arrow from Dark Messiah is pretty awesome, you would shoot it at anything made of wood and use it to climb up. It would basically be a grappling hook you could use in different situations. Now, if I were to give you an original idea, how about arrows that grew the farther they were shot? So a point blank shot wouldn't help much, but maybe every 10 or 20 feet it would increase a size increment (at x feet, your medium sized character's arrow becomes a large arrow, going up a damage dice. At 2x feet, it goes up another size and damage dice, and at 3x it maxes out). These would probably be expensive, but I think its a cool idea. |
| Grave_Accomplice05-26-07, 01:49 AM | Exploding arrows: they do an additonal 1d8 points of piercing damage on the next round as the fragmented head tears through the body. |
| pflame500005-26-07, 01:58 AM | the ones in AaEG are slashing arrows, blunt arrows, and some alchemical stuff that has adverse effects. |
| ishpu05-26-07, 06:52 AM | that was my idea... anti-magic arrows would be pretty cool too. maybe a flashing arrow that upon impact flashes possibly blinding/deafening opponents? i personally thought healing arrows would be cool... they have some in the masters of the wild book. |
| Alon D'ar05-26-07, 07:41 AM | Depends on what kind of character your trying to play. I forget which book I pulled it out of but I have a character with some Cure Critical Wound arrows. I suppose in theory with DM approval you could have Inflict arrows instead of cure arrows. |
| ishpu05-26-07, 08:07 AM | i think an arrow that could use the dimensional anchor or entangle spell when it sucessfully was used for a ranged pin would rock. |
| Cala, Legend Reborn05-26-07, 08:36 AM | Fountainhead Arrow from MIC is a cool, affordable arrow for the low levels. |
| sineous blackspell05-26-07, 09:12 AM | arrows made from bamboo that splinter on impact normal damage for the hit with some secondary damage or minus till splinters are removed with heal check (not from a book) reed arrows (hollow grass) hit normal damage victim suffers additional damage from bloodloss more damage or con (not from book) glass arrow(prob expensive)non magical shatters on impact same effect as bamboo in addition reflex save or blinded as well (not from a book) enjoy ! |
| kjenks05-26-07, 09:35 AM | Races of the Wild has some cool arrows: Arrow, Blunt: These projectiles have blunt tips wrapped in leather instead of pointed arrowheads. They have a shorter range increment than normal arrows and deal non-lethal damage. Source: Races of the Wild, page 163. Arrow, Dragonsbreath: a dragonsbreath arrow has a shaft soaked in resin or pitch and a slightly enlarged head filled with a dab of alchemist's fire. Slots in the head force air into the chamber when the arrow is fired, igniting the alchemist's fire and the shaft as well. The slots in the head emit a low screech as the arrow flies through the air. A dragonsbreath arrow deals an extra 1 point of fire damage when it hits a target, and the target must make a DC 15 Reflex save or catch fire. A dragonsbreath arrow can't be reused on a miss. Source: Races of the Wild, page 164. Arrow, Serpentstongue: Arrows aren't very useful for attacking objects, so the elves developed the serpentstongue arrow, which has a forked point with sharp edges on the tips and inside the prongs. A skilled archer can neatly sever a rope or leather strap with a serpentstongue arrow. A serpentstongue arrow deals both piercing and slashing damage, and it deals full damage (rather than the usual half damage) to objects with a hardness of 5 or less. Source: Races of the Wild, page 164. Arrow, Swiftwing: These arrows are made slightly longer than normal with a small, aerodynamic head and enlarged fletching (the feathers added to the shaft) for extra stability and accuracy on long shots. A swiftwing arrow incurs only half the usual penalty for attacking at range (-1 per range increment rather than the usual -2). Source: Races of the Wild, page 164. |
| Sajek05-26-07, 10:04 AM | CoH had grease arrows, hollow arrows filled with a repository of slippery grease. On impact, they shatter and have the effects of the Grease spell centered on the target. Could be useful. |
| Holy_Beholder05-26-07, 10:31 AM | Hollow Glass arrows filled with alchemists fire. First the glass arrow hits them, for normal damage, then it shatters, and they get splashed with alchemists fire for another +1d4. Its like a cheap flaming arrow. I also like hollow glass holy water arrows, hollow glass acid arrows, and anything else you can get the DM(me usually) to agree on. Then there was that one time there was a hollow glass ballista bolt loaded with 4 bottles of holy water. That vampire never saw it coming:) . There was also a ballista bolt with 4 bottles of alchemists fire in it, that saw use against a white dragon. Of course, I play in a more atypical campaign where most stuff is made out of special kinds of glass, or wood coated with special kinds of glass, buildings, bridges, everything. Metal's are impurities added into the glass to give them stuff. It is a pretty cool campaign, and those arrows above are available(albeit expensive) The alchemy skill can be used to make new stuff to fill glass arrows with. |
| Koretsu05-26-07, 12:01 PM | I once played an Artificer that used a flintlock that fired spell-imbued bullets. Crafting-wise, they'd operate as a use-activated, single-use item (Similar to a scroll). Wonderful thing there is you can scratch out the word "Bullet", and replace it with the word arrow. :) Nothing quite like possessing an Arrow of Fireball. Another personal favorite was using the occasional Bullet of Heal. :D |
| MCage05-26-07, 12:14 PM | the ones in AaEG are slashing arrows, blunt arrows, and some alchemical stuff that has adverse effects. I belive the blunt ones are called frog crotch, i always thought that was a great name |
| Qwicksilver05-26-07, 12:14 PM | This goes a bit against the whole "mundane arrows" thing. I've seen quite a few good ones from the AaEG, but I"d also like to note that one can get arrows of spell-storing for a +1 enhancement. For +1 arrows of spell storing, you can imbue the arrow with any targeted spell up to third level, and the arrow breaks upon striking any surface, but will cast the spell if it scores a hit on the enemy. This is an odd use of the spell-storing option for weapon enhancements, so I'd ask the DM first. I'd also like to point out that, it isn't illegal, just not known to be fully legal. The implications of it are also a bit puzzling in that, if you work it out, an arrow of spell-storing with cure moderate wounds in it costs less than the potion. Still it's a really cool way to make your archer a much more diverse combatant. |
