How useful would these be to my beguiler, who is taking over for our rouge, who died a smear on the pavement...?

Close to worthless.

Magic Items cease to work when they break.
Any arrow that hits breaks.
Any arrow that misses either breaks or gets lost. I personally rule 50% break, 50% are lost.

Try some kind of thrown weapon of Silence instead. Much better.

Or put silence on the bow itself.

If you put it on the bow, then the silence comes from the bow, making you silent, not the enemy.

The idea of doing it on an ranged weapon is to get the silence area near the enemey, not near you.

No, it would imbue it on the arrow, which then gets stuck into the enemy.

No, that only works with special, permanent enchantments. Not with every spell you cast on the bow.

I guess that's what I meant. I didn't realize it was a single casting, but a magic item made permanently.

Edit: Wait a minute, the OP is talking about a magical item!

Trust me in the other thread...

Go with daggers.

I checked and found the legal magical encahntment that lets you put in on the bow.

It is called Silent Strike.

It is +1 cost, found in Dragon magazine, and has a SAVE NEGATES.

You have to be pretty foolish to get a save negates item when you can just get a dagger that has no save.

P.S. Arrows do not stick into people you shoot.

At least not until they go under 1 hitpoint.

Sorry to dissapoint you, but if you read the PHB you see that it works like this:

max hitpoints to 1 = JUST A FLESH WOUND.
0 hitpoint = you finally have a single real wound. It slows you down tremdously, but you can still take actions.
-1 to -9 hitpoints you are either bleeding to death or stabilized near death.
-10 = you are dead.

Just a flesh wound does not by any strecth of the immagination include having an arrow sticking out of your body.

Really? I must have missed that in all my years of playing 3e. What page is that on or what section of the SRD is it in?

It's one interpretation of the internally inconsistent HP rules. Witness harpoons and sneak attack and how immunity to critical hits is generally flavored...

... also, there's arguments that Tanglefoot Bags work with silence, as does getting casting it on a rock or a dagger and throwing it at them. Or you could use harpoons, but that's an EWP...

having used this tactic before, in various games, i will caveat some things...

It is not in the list of "Permanent"-able spells. Therefore you must adhere to its min/lvl duration. That makes it very nice on a stone (for a rogue or something close), but by no means a thing that exists every fight, it must be prepped, or done in combat.

Depending on the situation it can be a nasty trick, making a caster waste an action... If the caster has moved and casts, then it is possible they will have to move again out of the area. Or you force them to move and cast, which can all kinds of problems for a caster moving through threatenned area.

However, that being said, it is not a counterspell, and a beguiler might benefit from it immensly (such as casting a charm, giving an order and silencing the area around the charmed creature, so that it cant be talked out of its orders, etc.) it can also be a grave hassle (i.e. the enemy grappler monk picks up the thrown stone, and begins to assassinate any casters, perhaps a cleric) and since its thrown, and by the very nature cant be applied to a thrown object that is destroyed (argument against tanglefoot bags) then it can be easy for the enemy to pick it up (given that the enemy is int enough) and use against the party...

best intentions mean nothing to a dead cleric and an angry fighter :D

Just a flesh wound does not by any strecth of the immagination include having an arrow sticking out of your body.

Your imagination is quite limited then, as it is very easy to imagine an arrow sticking into a fleshy, non-vital bit (kinda the idea of a fleshwound).

Oh, and that scale on HP is in now way RAW. Why you adhere to it so strictly is beyond me or anyone else here.
