| Lanathan09-01-07, 09:03 PM | Several issues came up at our last session and I am hoping to get some answers from the knowledgable people on the boards here. First off, when using Anti-magic field and an artifact is brought within the area, the spell description indicates that the artifact would be unaffected. Does this also include any spells cast from an artifact? Example; A caster puts up an Anti-magic field and then attempts to use their Staff of the Magi to cast a Fireball thru it, would the Fireball be unaffected by the field because its cast from an artifact? Also, when the same sernerio is presented except with the caster having a Silence spell cast on them, could they still use the staff without being able to use verbal components? Second, two of my players have come up with a couple magic items and are curious as to pricing and if they could even be made. Both items are vests/surcoats, one is intended to be used by a rogue, the other for a dwarven defender. The rogue wants a vest that can cast Silence in the same manner a Ring of Invisibility casts invis. The dwarven defender wants a surcoat that has continual Protection from Evil and Deathward spells in place. Based on DMs guide, its seems that the Silence Vest would be the same price as a Ring of Invisibility 20,000gp perhaps 30,000gp because of its body location. The Protection Surcoat seems quite a bit more tricky, the Protection from Evil component seems to only be 4,000gp value though it seems like it should be greater. The Deathward component would be a 104,000gp value, combine the two(which seems like there might also be a price adjustment for) and add uncustomary space limitation would be a 162,000gp value. Does the pricing seem correct, or have I missed something? Opinions? I would appreciate any insightful comments on these subjects and you have my thanks in advance. |
| Lanathan09-05-07, 09:45 PM | Had one more new request today, two of my players want to combine the effects of Friend Shield Rings and Rings of Sustenance. Friend Shield Rings are 50,000gp and Ring of Sustenance are 2,500gp, quite honestly I am completely unsure as to how much to price out a combination ring like this. 52,500gp is what it would take to buy both rings, so getting them both in one version would be worth double at least? 105,000gp maybe? Any feedback would be great. |

There's rules for that. Guidelines, actually. You double the price of one of the items, not both. Especially since the ring of sustenance is so minor, it's the one I'd double (technically, you're "making it slotless", so it doesn't count against your ring allotment, so really it should be their choice, if you allow it) ... it'd be around 55,000gp. Which is far more fair than something in excess of 100,000g. |

A staff of the magi is NOT casting a fireball, you are USING the STAFF. No casting is done. Among other things this mean you are not allowed to apply your MEtamagic feats to the staff. But yes, it also means that it does work in Anti-Magic. 1b. The caster is affected by the Silence spell, preventing them from activating the staff with the verbal command. 2a. Silence is realatively straight forward, as long as it targets the wearer. It does NOT have the same issues as the Ring of Invisibilty. Reduce the price. 2b. Continual Protection from evil has to be priced by the cost of the stat'ed out stuff (+2 to AC costs 4,000) etc. Then add in the save bonus, and 1,000 gp fo the other thins. Then throw in the other effects. It is legal, but a bit more expensive than he thinks it is. Deathward is pretty high up there, I would let him ignore the space component. But also note, the protection from evil should get the 50% penalty for being added on to another effect. 3. Rings: StruckingFuggle was almost right. You only add 50% of the price of one ring, not doubleing it. |
