ASF-free non-magical armor? [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-30-06, 03:04 AM I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I just realized something. With new options from recent supplements, it appears that it's possible to make a chain shirt with zero arcane spell failure.

A mithral shirt has 10% ASF,
add thistledown (Races of the Wild) to reduce ASF by 5%,
add the feycraft template (DMG II) to reduce ASF by another 5%,
and you have a chain shirt with 0% ASF, 1850 gp. Wow.

Now, thistledown is supposedly made only by elves and halflings, and feycraft armor is only made by fey or those in the service of fey, but the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. You could have an elf armorer working for fey creatures, or vice versa.

This seems too good to be true. Am I missing something?

P.S. Yes, I know about blended quartz, but I don't like it.

Of course, I don't know anything about Thistledown or the Feycraft template, so I couldn't say if it's a legal combo. Sounds fine to me, though, since yer spending 1,850gp for it!

It's not less useful than a 1st level spell. It compares to Bracers of Armor +4, which is 16,000 gp. Additionally, you can enchant this just like normal armor (unless feycraft prohibits that... I don't have DMG II). You can get a +3 feycraft thistledown mithral chain shirt for around 12,000 gp. And this is in addition to the mithral bucker that wizards already use.

You can now get a wizard with +5 armor and +5 shield and no ASF. That's huge.

Additionally, you can enchant this just like normal armor (unless feycraft prohibits that... I don't have DMG II). You can get a +3 feycraft thistledown mithral chain shirt for around 12,000 gp. And this is in addition to the mithral bucker that wizards already use.

You can now get a wizard with +5 armor and +5 shield and no ASF. That's huge.
it IS less useful because it still has SOME armor check penalties among other restrictions. by 6th level a wizard can have an extended greater mage armor l(+6AC) asting 12 hours (a full day's adventuring) that costs *doot do do doooot* NOTHING!
