| Callahan08-18-05, 07:50 PM | This round hat comes in many different designs, but always has a round rim around it. If the rim is pushed back it reveals a razor-sharp edge. This idea is not entirely the work of Assassins, but is more common to low life drawlers who would sew a razorblade into the brim of their cap, for a bit of help in a melee. Since then Assassins, who are always on the look out for concealed blades, have perfected the design. The hat now has a solid razor-sharp rim which can be used when in a grapple and due to the assassins ever present taste for the extravagant it has also been designed so that the user can throw the hat at an enemy. This is a hat for a man who is always looking for that extra edge. Exotic Weapons Cost Dmg (S) Dmg (M) Critical R.I. Weight Type Assassin Hat 15 gp 1d3 1d4 18–20/x2 20ft 1 lb. Slashing Assassin Hat: This weapon can be used in two ways: While worn on the head the hat can be used to attack an enemy that is in a grapple or occupying the same space as the wearer. Otherwise the hat can also be thrown with a 10-foot increment. As a melee weapon the Hat is nearly impossible to use as it is nearly impossible to effectively hold and use to attack. Anyone using the hat as a melee weapon takes a –4 penalty to attack and damages himself with it on a natural 1 attack roll. The hat is also treated as a hidden weapon. It takes a Spot check (DC 16) to discover the blade. Rogues and assassins are treated as being proficient with this weapon. |

| wizkid08-18-05, 08:22 PM | Sounds like Oddjob's hat from James Bond movies. But I like the idea, good job! :D  |

| Bluebrush08-18-05, 08:52 PM | This looks pretty good But grapple usage seems odd Discworld inspired, yes? |
| Callahan08-18-05, 09:03 PM | yes indeed it is from the Disc and from James Bond. The Grapple idea is basically there because I do not think a normal person can effectively head but someone in a regular sword fight. They'd have to be pretty darn close to each other to effectively use a weapon that's attacked to your head. Of course, I'm open to suggestions. |
| Fanged Fremont08-18-05, 09:08 PM | Now, how hard would it be to catch if it was a returning weapon? Would you have to skillfully poke your hand through the middle to catch it? |
| Dragonsblood08-18-05, 10:04 PM | Seems a little too inexpensive to me. Otherwise a great idea :) I suggest building in a Hat of Disguise and/or requiring it to be a +1 weapon or greater. |
| Callahan08-18-05, 10:35 PM | Now, how hard would it be to catch if it was a returning weapon? Would you have to skillfully poke your hand through the middle to catch it? Ever seen Mad max? Don't try to catch it unless you've had practice. Otherwise I always figured that returning weapons function favourably towards it's user. As in slowing down before it knocks the user's block off. I suggest building in a Hat of Disguise and/or requiring it to be a +1 weapon or greater. I'm not designing a magical item; it's just a clever weapon. Though if I were, i'd make it wounding and possibly make a new enchantment that blinds enemies. |
| Dragonsblood08-19-05, 03:46 AM | It just seems too impractical to use effectively without using magic as a "suspension of disbelief." Then again so does the Orc Double Axe, and the Spiked Chain, so go figure :p When I think of this hat, I think of that one guy from Mortal Combat (2?), who's application of a blade brimmed hat was supernatural. Which is cool, but hard to swallow from a realism standpoint. Maybe it would help if I saw the Bond movie everyone's referencing :/ |

When he threw the hat on a foe, it dealt damage to the foe and in the same time rebounded on him, and Kung Lao was able to catch it. |

In the movie the hat didn't come back to him, he had to go and pick it back up. The character, Oddjob, was able to decapitate a statue with it. Of course when he went to use it on Bond he missed horribley. |
| KmartKommando08-20-05, 11:43 AM | "Ow, that hurt. What kind of person throws a shoe? Honestly? You fight like a woman...erk!" :D |
| TyraaloftheFist08-20-05, 01:50 PM | Well, of course Oddyman missed...can't have the hero being decapitated, or even nearly so. :D Your idea reminds me a lot of Kung Lao's hat...maybe have it bounce in a random direction after striking? I can't really imagine a hat sticking out of someone, or else I'd suggest increasing the damage, although I can imagine a hat bouncing off and hitting someone else. If you were to do the bounce-in-random-direction idea, then it'd probably be either a 1d6 or a 1d8 to decide which direction it went in, and it would go an extra ten feet in that direction, possibly...hats can go pretty far, if you're lucky on the throw. Ehhh...yeah, I babble. Anyway, if you like that idea, here's a more structured variant of it: On a successful ranged attack with the Assassin's Hat, it ricochets off the target in a random direction determined by rolling a 1d6(if using hexes) or 1d8(if using the grid of squares). What number makes it go which direction is entirely up to the DM, but it goes ten feet in that direction, possibly going right back to the wielder, who can make a reflex save (DC is up to the DM, as well) to catch the hat. If a target is within ten feet of the enemy who was struck by the hat, then the wielder of the hat may (must, really) make a second attack roll at a -4 penalty. If this attack roll is successful, then the hat strikes that enemy, as well. Of course, flying razor-brimmed hats are indiscriminate about who they hit, so the wielder and his allies may also be subject to attack from the Hat. Whether this second attack is successful or not, the hat simply falls into the square ten feet away that it went to after ricocheting off to whetever it went. Eheh...don't ask. It's actually based on an idea I got once while playing Starcraft that had to do with ricocheting shuriken...anyway, it's just an idea, probably not a very good one, as it increases the overall load of bookkeeping and things that need to be remembered, although it could possibly add some extra comedy to an otherwise tense fight...of course, throwing a hat at somebody, even a razor-brimmed hat, often inspires at least a bemused chuckle from the enemy that has the hat thrown at them. |

Otherwise it should be fine, but the critical range needs to be changed from 18-20/x2 to x3. The blade I have is light and razor sharp; a heavy blade will function more like an axe edge when hitting a target. |
