All tips are welcome .. (like whitch tools/weapons to buy, or how to play an assassin..) Well, the only thing I can think of that your PC probably wouldn't have already is poison. Poison is a wonderful thing for an assassin. As far as tools and weapons, just stick with what your PC knows. There's no use trying to specialize in a crossbow (for instance) if your PC is already fairly good with a shortbow. One note, though...please don't degenerate the player into "Ooooh, I do a death attack on him! Sweet! Now I do a death attack on that guy! Sweet!" There's nothing quite as sad... |
| Settra09-11-04, 04:07 PM | yeah, I was yhinking poison could be useful.. ;) and I want degenerate the player into a "dath attack - maniac".... Thanks for your advice, though.. has anyone else got any advice? |
| FriendoftheDork09-11-04, 04:35 PM | combination weapons could be cool - with hidden weapons in otherwise unseemly objects, anything from a staff to something in your clothing. You don't need heavy damage dealers to kill people with, you can use things like tiny darts, shurikens, knives to deadly effect with the combination of poisons, sneak attack and death attack. Also, keep in mind you're not a fighter, and there is no such things as fighting honorably for you. In a general melee a fighter could beat you, so make sure you have plenty of getaway items such as: Tanglefoot bags, potions/scrolls of haste, expeditious retreat, fly, levitate, disgiuse/alter self, and similar. My favourite is an egg filled with a mix of pepper and secret ingredients that causes temporary blindness (as in mace). |
| Telperion09-11-04, 04:35 PM | One note, though...please don't degenerate the player into "Ooooh, I do a death attack on him! Sweet! Now I do a death attack on that guy! Sweet!" There's nothing quite as sad... That being said there is one magical item in the DMG, which is specifically designed for assassins. It's called Assassin's Dagger, and it's pretty good. Other than that...think like a rogue... You probably want to go over the various special substances and items in the PHB. There's some great standard stuff in there. Personally I keep tanglefoot bags, plenty of acid, some antitoxin, smoke sticks and tindertwigs with my character when on a mission. There are also some non-standard items in Player's Guide to Rogues and Rangers (S&SS) that are very handy, such as a hook crossbow, which is basically a crossbow that includes a rope and a grappling hook. Of course you'll want to have some poisons like these... Oil of Taggit. This is a very useful utility poison. Doesn't kill, but it takes your target down with a fair amount of reliability. Id Moss. Great against wizards. Even if they survive your attack their spell casting is going to be considerably hindered. Insanity Mist. Same as the previous one, but great against Divine casters. Death Blade. This is the favourite. Very reliable and doesn't cost a fortune. Most targets won't survive no more than one minute. Keep in mind that the tougher your target is the higher the probability that your poisons aren't going to affect him / her / it. All sorts of potions are generally your friends, since you don't want to risk casting spells (although the ability to do so spontaniously is very handy after you have a few levels of assassin) when you are in a difficult spot. There are also all manner of Magical Items that will improve your character's capabilities. Choose the ones you like. The Assassin's Dagger is specifically designed for assassins, but as I recall it only improves your Death Attack ability a bit, so it's not as essential as it might sound. |
| Settra09-12-04, 07:12 AM | From the SRD: Assassin's Dagger: This wicked-looking, curved +2 dagger provides a +1 bonus to the DC of a Fortitude save forced by the death attack of an assassin. Moderate Necromancy; CL 9th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, slay living;Price 18,302 gp; cost 9,302gp + 720 XP. Is this dagger really worth 18302 gp? I mean, a +2 dagger is all good and well... but that only costs 8000 gp, which means you are paying 10302gp only for a +1 to the Fortitude save..... But thanks for all the other help... you guys are so helpful... :D |
| D.A.Dervish09-12-04, 07:35 AM | That would be 10000, actually, 302 gp is for the masterwork dagger. I guess you could add that enchantment to some other weapon of your choice for 10000. "Assassin's Greatclub", yeah! /D.A.Dervish |

| Evil O09-12-04, 02:09 PM | Someone forgot the very handy item called Caltrops, they are uncool to step on and running through an area in which they are, hurts like a ***** and gives a penalty to the movement of your opponents. Evil O And yes, I do play an assassin myself. :D Smokestick, tanglefoot bag and other like items are a assassins best friend, just after the others in the group that keeps the opponents occopied while you sneak attack them with your Shortbow(arrows ARE poisonend, offcourse) :D |
| Flagonpaw09-12-04, 02:25 PM | Get an Immovable Rod as soon as you possibly can. Used properly, it will be the most useful tool you'll have in your arsenal. Feint, then leave this in your wake for your opponent to slam into, and strike hard while he's prone. You can bar doors with it, or use pick pocket to slip this in your opponent's pants to immobilize them while you carve them up. With a market price of 7,500 gp's it's worth it to pick one up, although any decent assassin should be able to procure a couple of these without the hassle of purchasing it. :D |

The people of Silgrad (name of the town I am currently "operating" out of) will from now on never be safe.... :smirk: |
| Egres09-12-04, 08:43 PM | An advice for Assassins as well as for all the Sneak Attacks dealers.... If you see a Construct/Undead/Plant, do what we do....run! |
| Corollax03-27-05, 01:10 AM | the assassin's dagger was commented upon earlier...it seems you don't understand exactly how that was priced (someone called the +1 to the DC a 10,000 gp bonus. which, while theoretically could be the case isn't very likely. here's why.) Assassin's Dagger +2 = 18302. -2 (dagger itself) -300 (masterwork) =18000. it's +2, yet it costs 18000, which is coincidentally the price of a +3 weapon..hrm... Therefore, I'm lead to believe that 'assassin's' was treated simply as a +1 bonus. (Don't worry if you didn't catch this. I'm in precalc right now, and I've been studying nothing but functions for the past 2 years now. weapons pricing just happens to be y=2000x^2 + misc.) |
| Evil O03-27-05, 05:15 AM | Settra you cant get enough of; Poison, Catrops, Tanglefootbags, Smokesticks, and the like. They can hamper, trip, immobilize your opponents and if you get on the wrong side of your fellow group members, it can hurt them as well. ;) My Rogue/Assassin has climbed all the way up to level 20 (10/10) and have even gained 1 level as ghost, ohh so cool to go through walls to elimate someone and then walk away onnoticed :D !!!! Even better to walk through floors and celings to see if any traps will hurt my fellow members just to remove them and walk by unharmed. Or in a tough fight, just remove my Ring of Manifestiation, thus become ghost and therefore I can only be harmed by ghosttouch weapons. And not many have thoose!! Ohh, I cant wait till next time....... :D Evil O |
| Elurindel03-27-05, 05:31 AM | You could always purchase a set of Nekode from Oriental Adventures. They're a pair of claws that you strap to your hands, deal 1d4 damage, are light, piercing and slashing weapons, you can't be disarmed of them, and they give you +1 to climb checks. Alternatively, there's also Climber's tools in the handbook which don't stack with nekode. |

| niklas03-27-05, 01:10 PM | Man, don`t sweat it with all those money calculations. Want a powerful death attack? Get "Ability Focus(Death attack)" It`s in the savage species book, listed as a general feat(not monstrous) and is specially made to be used at these things(death attack, stunning fist, etc) It grants you a +2 to the special attack`s DC. |
| Norseman03-27-05, 02:35 PM | FYI: Watch out for fighters, barbarians, and paladins. Especially paladins. The group that you can use the death attack/poison on most easily is spellcasters. Spellcasters almost always have pitiful fortitude saves, and they usually have useful stuff lying around. |
| simen_8803-27-05, 05:26 PM | Get a bag of salt or metal dust. Great for throwing in peoples' eyes. Also, the combination wand of baleful polymorph+flyswatter is quite lethal. |
| Deviston03-27-05, 09:52 PM | http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=381376 here you go, this was my post, got bucket-o-ideas |
| Quirriff03-27-05, 10:13 PM | Necklace of Strangulation. |
| Elurindel03-28-05, 03:51 AM | Both good idea and will give you a ninja-like flavor. ;) The onyl problem with Nekode is that you need Exotic Weapon Proficiency. |

| sanzo the space worm04-01-05, 09:11 PM | To make a good assasin get a poisen dagger/shortsword a poisen shortbow/crossbow a ring/cloak of invisibility a few caltrops and tangle foot bags and any light armor. |
| gorfnad the shiznit04-02-05, 11:36 PM | ring of invisibility is always useful for an assassin, ring of greater invisibility is even better. cloak of displacement is great for when you have to go into close quaters. |
| gorfnad the shiznit04-02-05, 11:40 PM | slippers of spiderclimb are immensely useful if you want to get to great high spots to make attacks from or just to escape when neccesary. a reasonable idea for a feat to get, although it would hurt your assassin spells, is the mage slayer feat. that way you can get the upper hand on most casters especially if you can flank them or some how get them flat-footed |
