A PC is climbing down a certicle shaft, using a rope. On his way down he encounters a creature climbing up the wall of the shaft. The creature attacks the PC and the PC, of course, wants to make a counter attack. What are the modifiers applied to the creature and the PC for fighting in this scenario?

Read the Climb skill. Important parts are:

1)You need both hands free to climb, but you may cling to a wall with one hand while you cast a spell or take some other action that requires only one hand

2) While climbing, you can’t move to avoid a blow, so you lose your Dexterity bonus to AC (if any). You also can’t use a shield while climbing.

3) But... A creature with a Climb speed listed retains its Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (if any) while climbing, and opponents get no special bonus to their attacks against it.

4) Any time you take damage while climbing, make a Climb check against the DC of the slope or wall. Failure means you fall from your current height and sustain the appropriate falling damage.

You would also need to take consentration tests in order to keep hanging, and grapple/climb checks. Fighting with your offhand weapons gives penalty to hit, but climbing with it would give even greater penalties...
