Treat it as 5' |
| Tony Vargas07-31-06, 09:06 PM | AoOs happen when an enemy attempts to exit a square you threaten. Weapons like the longspear threaten a 'donut' around you, between 5&10' out. If you picture a square on the grid 5 squares by 5, with the wielder in the center, all the squares on the edge are threatened - including the ones on the corner, which are more like 7.5-15' away, rather than 5-10 (just a minor aberation of using a grid). If you move from outside that area, to an adjacent square, you pass through the threatened area, which means exiting one of those threatened squares, which provokes. Simple. |
| Akuen07-31-06, 09:20 PM | hmm... this is sorta hard to be sure to understand correctly, without any visuals. on this picture, if we assume the player in question in at the green square, is it then the blue or the red squares that he threatens for AoO, if he is wielding a weapon with 10ft reach, such as a long spear? http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n88/Akuen/AoO.jpg |

As Tony said, the enemy will usually provoke an AoO if he moves out of a red square, whether he passes into a blue square, into the "white" (from your picture) around the outside, or even into another red square. This means any enemy closing with you (with less reach than you) will usually provoke an AoO. Ways to not provoke an AoO: 1) a 5ft step does not provoke an AoO. A 5-ft step is allowed once per round on your turn, and if you take one you can't take (or have made) any other movement that round. So if a bad guy begins his turn in a red square (ie because you moved to attack him), he can 5-ft step to a blue square and will not provoke an AoO. 2) Tumbling. One of the major uses of tumble is to prevent AoOs from moving out of a threatened square. 3) Spring Attack. Spring attack protects you from movement-based AoOs from the target of your Spring Attack. 4) Withdraw. This is for running away. You are allowed to move up to twice your speed as a fullround action, and the square you start in is considered not threateend for movement based AoOs. 5) Having any cover, or total concealment, gives you immunity to AoOs (assuming said protection applies against your opponent; if you're invisible and the opponent has see invisibility, he can still AoO you). Those are the major ways to avoid AoOs, there may be others, especially with non-core material. |
