| ShaRd200005-10-05, 08:04 PM | I was wondering today if say I was a shadow dancer, and I had my shadow companion run from someone (straight down, into the floor) Would that provoke an attack of opportunity? I mean, would his going into the floor right in front of someone that's attacking him protect him before the person has an attack of opportunity? Or would the person just whack him as soon as he started to sink into the floor? |
| Thorak05-10-05, 08:55 PM | Moving out of a threatened square provokes an AoO, if it's not a 5-foot step or a Withdraw full-round action. It doesn't matter what direction you're moving. Also, given that AoOs occur before the action that provokes them, and you easily see why the guy gets to whack your etheral friend. The floor doesn't stop it for the same reason being too far away doesn't stop a step straight back; the AoO occurs before you get that far. |

| Tsuul05-10-05, 09:45 PM | As Thorak mentioned, the AoO happens before he moves. So they are both above ground when it happens. In the split second the etherial person drops his defenses and focuses his full attention toward moving down is when the attack occurs. Then he gets to move. |

| Thorak05-11-05, 07:05 AM | But if theyre both on the ground a 5-foot step straight down should put him out of harms way IMO Yes, but 5-foot steps never provoke AoOs. I assumed it must have been a bit more of a move, since the question was whether the movement would provoke an AoO. |
