Attack of Opportunity Question [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-25-06, 03:57 AM SAy there is Wizard A and Warrior B. Warrior B wins initative and attacks WIzard A with a normal attack and Wizard B casts a spell that takes a standard action. Does Wizard B have to make a concentration check? Also can anyone point to me where i can ask the RPGA rules questions?

06-25-06, 05:14 AM D&D being a turn-based system, the damage from Warrior B's attack is already over when Wizard A starts casting, so no Concentration check is required because of that attack. If Warrior B still threatens Wizard A at the start of casting, that provokes an Attack of Opportunity. If the AoO causes damage, that forces a Concentration check with DC = 10 + damage dealt. Wizard A could have avoided the AoO by casting defensively, requiring a successful Concentration check with DC = 15 + the spell’s level. Since it takes no action to make the Concentration check in the first place, it never hurts to try to cast defensively. If you fail you're just back to the AoO scenario. If you succeed, you're done making Concentration checks for this spell.

06-25-06, 07:55 AM Not quite true. You never provoke a "cast a spell" AoO when casting defensively. If you fail the Concentration check then you lose the spell but still do not provoke an AoO (PH pg 140).

It sucks, but Oliver is absolutely correct. But people are forgetting you can always just 5 foot step back and THEN cast the spell and not provoke the AoO unless that fighter is using a reach weapon.

Also can anyone tell me where to email rules questions to the RPGA because he wants it answered by them for a tournament I was planning to run and I could noo find the email address used for rules questions on the sit.
