Attacking a Grappler [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-05-05, 12:44 AM I can't find the exact rule in the SRD, but I believe that when one attacks a creature engaged in a grapple there's a fifty-fifty chance of actually hitting the other creature in the grapple. What if the target creature is larger than the other - say, for a random example, an assassin vine attacking a human? In that case would there be an increased likelihood of hitting the right target?

Also, is it just me, or does the word "grapple" start to look and sound weird the more you read it?

03-05-05, 01:01 AM The chance for an attack to go astray is 25%; the same as bull rush, they are both instances of characters entering eachothers' squares.

Size only affects the grapple size modifier and the maximum size you can grapple, which is anything up to one size category bigger than you. Size won't affect the chance for the attack to go astray, nor will it grant a grappled character cover.

From the SRD:

Roll randomly to see which grappling combatant you strike. That defender loses any Dexterity bonus to AC.

Note: this applies only to ranged attacks.

03-05-05, 01:05 PM Thanks, this helps a lot. I want the other PCs to keep hacking at an enemy while it's grappling another PC, without further endangering their teammate.
