I can't seem to find the rules for this in the 3.5 PHB. Specifically, if you make a melee attack against a wand in an opponent's hand.

What's the hardness and hp of a wand anyways?

Look up Sunder in the combat section.

Sunder, or disarm. Sunder breaks it, disarm knocks it free.

So sunder works on objects other than weapons and armor now? Great :)

From SRD:
A typical wand has AC 7, 5 hit points, hardness 5, and a break DC of 16.

This kind of thing is in DMG magic item description, in the common part for each item type, exept for Wondrous items (witch, in my opinnion, should each list hp and hardness in their description or have a "master list" for listing such values for each and every item).

Remember to adjust the AC according to Sunder rules for wielded items. This AC is based solely on size and DEX 0 to represent unmoving item.
