Mornin all
this is my first foray into the online world (i feel so old) so be gentle.

What are the modifiers for melee attacking into a grapple?

eg. the fighter is being grappled by a owlbear and i (the cleric)want to attack the creature without actually joining the grapple as my grapple check is poor.

The rules for this are in your PHB on the grapple page in the Combat Chapter. Or probably the SRD, but I don't feel like digging through that...
Good luck!

I've just finished reading the "All about grappling" article and have all my questions answered.
Thanks

Well, I guess there's no reason for me to post this, but for the edification of others who have the same question:

When making a melee attack into a grapple, your target is denied his dex bonus to AC.

When making a ranged attack into a grapple, you have a percentage chance to hit either combatant. Whoever is attacked loses his dex bonus to AC.

Beware of those Rules of the Game articles. They often contradict the rules and present "house rules" in the guise of clarifications. There were many such situations in the RotG articles about grappling, but Part Two and Part Four were fixed recently. It looks like they fixed most of the errors, but it's best to read the actual rules to make sure.
