Attacking with the off-hand without TWF [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-31-05, 08:14 PM In 3.5, what's the penalty (if any) for attacking with just a weapon held in the off-hand when you don't have two-weapon fighting?

I'm thinking of a rogue with a short sword in one hand and a throwing dagger or hand crossbow in the other; he'll use one or the other depending on range.

01-31-05, 08:19 PM It's just a -4 for using your left hand if you're right handed, etc. "Ambidexterity" is now part of the TWF feat.

Technically, it's not part of the TWF feat, it's bonuses for TWFing are. Ambidexterity used to also remove penalties for just using your off-hand to attack. There is no official way in 3.5 to remove this -4 penalty, and it hasn't been rolled into TWF.

If you only attack with one weapon during the round there shouldn't be any penalty at all. The penalties only start applying when you attack with two different weapons in different hands in the same round.Simply have it ruled as flavor. As long as you are not making attacks with the dagger/bow AND sword in the SAME round, there should be no mechanical difference. If you do, then you take the normal penalties associated.
