I saw a thread about crawling on the ground prokoving AoOs. Now, I dont want to transfert the topic on another one, but I find it rather silly that someone on the ground :

- Cannot stand up, move aside, or retake a lost weapon without provoking an attack of opportunity.

- stand still (ON THE GROUND) and be safe from those attacks.

If, during a fight, my opponent knock me down, I would try to roll over somewhere safe. I won't crawl, but moving aside much quicker. Or could I try to stand up on the defensive, making a full-round action, to at least put myself in a safe position?

Some people says that an AoO is provoked because you leave your defence open. Okay, if you put someone K.O., I doubt he focus much on his defence. Do I get a free AoO every round?

Just because someone's been knocked to the ground doesn't mean they stopped trying to dodge attacks. It's harder to dodge. A prone person takes a -4 to AC against melee attacks. However, a prone person doesn't suddenly become stupid enough to leave himself wide open.

Rolling out of your opponents reach is currently best represented by tumbling full speed away. It's a DC 25 tumble check. Other than that you just have to be nimble enough (have a high enough dex bonus to AC) and be smart enough to wear good armor.

When you roll over, your back is exposed and your shield and weapon are of no use in defending yourself. There's the 'guard-gap'.

With the exception of the 'kip-up' (a class feature of the Acrobat), I can't think of any way to stand up without applying both hands to the ground, which renders weapon and shield useless for defense. There's the gap.

If you wanted to expend (waste) your AoO every round on an unconscious target, I'd let you. However, since unconscious people don't perform actions, they obviously aren't performing actions that provoke an Attack of Opportunity.

That said, check the FAQ. There's actually a way listed that enables you to do a DC 25 Tumble check to do an 'action roll' and move 5' without an AoO, I believe as a move action, which might get you clear to stand up. I know it's there, I just can't FIND it right now ...

I know it's not part of the discussion, but you do not have ot put your hands on the ground to do a kip up.

In that thread you speak of, I posted the full-round kneel/stand combo that allows you to "stand up on the defensive", which requires two move actions. It takes longer to retake your feet carefully, that's just how the rules of being prone function.

As far as remaining still on the ground, of course you can do that, and you won't provoke any AoO as long as you remain still.

Some people says that an AoO is provoked because you leave your defence open. Okay, if you put someone K.O., I doubt he focus much on his defence. Do I get a free AoO every round? No. That is just a limitation/simplification of D&D (but here your beef is not with prone, but with the AoO rules in general).

Note that you can coup de grace the K.O.'d person, so it's still not a great condition to be in.
