I apologize if someone has posted this before and if it's in another thread, but as I was making my character I began to think about this.

Our DM has told our little group to make level 15 characters, and he wants me to make an evil character. Basically, he's a level 8 rogue/level 7 ghost-faced killer. Anyways, he has +6d6 bonuses in sneak attacks/sudden strikes and combat reflexes and here's my question.

I realize combat reflexes work on attacks of oppurtunity, but when the character has an oppurtunity to sneak attack a PC/NPC, DOES combat reflexes kick in, and if it does does the +6d6 damage apply or just weapon damage?

I want to say it doesn't, because the conditions of a sneak attack doesn't seem to fit in with attacks of oppurtinity but I'm not sure. Does it? Is my question, is there something I am missing or some new rule that I haven't read yet. I thank everyone who reads/erplies for your time.

If the conditions of sneak attack/sudden strike apply, then the attack is a sneak attack.

Yes, that's right. If you get an AoO on a flanked opponent, you get your SA damage. If you get an AoO on an opponent denied his Dex bonus, you get both SA and SS damage.

Combat reflexes just means you can take more AoOs in a round. Each one has to independently qualify for your extra damage.

Ok that makes sense. Now sneak attack is only applied once, correct? Say I have a situation that allows me to sneak attack and AoO. I have 22 dex, so that's 7 attacks of oppurtinity. The sneak attack is applied to my normal attack, the other attacks of oppurtinity are seperate from sneak attacks and I don't get the +6d6 to those attacks. Right?

The sneak attack bonus is applied whenever the conditions for a sneak attack exist. It's not limited to 1/round or anything of that sort.

Say you're flanking your opponent. On your turn, you hit him, and you get your SA damage.

Now during your opponent's turn, he decides to cast a spell. This provokes an AoO, and if you hit, you get SA damage. After all this damage, he decides he better escape, so he moves away (as a move action). This also provokes an AoO, and if you hit you get SA damage. Now it's your ally Borag the Bold's turn, and he decides to bull rush your opponent past you again. This gives you yet another AoO. Assuming they move through a square in which they are flanked, you get SA damage on it as well.

Does that start to make sense?

Ah, i think I see your line of thought. You're probably thinking that being able to sneak attack this much is too good to be true.

The thing is, unless your DM intentionally goes out of his way to set up a perfect situation for you, you will not get the chance to make 7 AoOs in a round, much less all of them qualifying for sneak attack.

It's kind of like fireball being able to do damage in the millions by packing as many fine-size enemies into a 20-ft radius as possible; the situation is theoretically possible, but it's not ever going to come up in play.

Ah put you see I have combat reflexes. The rules state that if I am in any situation that provokes an attack of oppurtinity I get that AoO, PLUS, other AoO equal to my dex bonus. I don't believe this applies to SA and SS, but that's what I'm trying to figure out.

No. Combat Reflexes give you extra Attacks of Opportunity equal to your dexterity modifier, but it doesn't let you make more than one at a time. Each action that provokes an attack of opportunity, you get one attack. It just so happens that if your enemy makes 7 separate actions that provoke attacks of opportunity (unlikely unless there are multiple enemies), then you would be able to take an attack of opportunity against each one. It does not let you take 7 AoOs for one provocation, it lets you take an AoO on 7 different provocations.

OIh wow. Thank you very much for that, I never realized that, it makes more sense now that way.

Note also that you can only claim an AoO for "leaving a threatened square" once per round per enemy, regardless of how many threatened squares they leave or AoOs you have.
