Hey everybody, how's it going?
This is my first post on any of these forums, although I'm an experienced DM and all that good stuff. Recently, one of my 16th-level PCs wanted to purchase arrows made from aurorum, from the Book of Exalted Deeds p. 38, so he would have arrows that would constantly reform after being destroyed upon impact- never ending ammunition. I was/am not sure whether or not aurorum was inteded for steel melee weapons (i.e. swords, spears, maces and so on) and shields and armor, as opposed to ammuntion. My primary fear is that such a "limitless" supply of ammunition could be very unbalancing. Would he be able to by arrows made from aurorum? If so, would he buy them in packs of 50, or single arrows (akin to slaying arrows)? Thanks for the help.

Do they add any bonuses to his shots, or is their sole purpose their limitlessness. Most DMs don't worry about #s of arrows, except for magic arrows anyway, so if they just provide the equivalent of unlimited normal arrows, it'd be pretty much the equivalent of avoiding the hassle of saying "I buy arrows" every time he hits a town.

Aurorum is described as a metallic substance, so you couldn't have arrows of pure Aurorum, so you won't have to worry about that. Bolts and Arrows are both made mostly of wood, aren't they? If that's the case, then, yeah, you can't do that. Hope that helps.

Yea bolts and arrows are made mostly from wood. The main problem I had with it is say he buys 50 +3 arrows, and coats them with aurorum. They will never be destroyed, and after every fight he can gather them up again. This is a severe free ride in terms of paying for magical ammuntion.

whoa why the hostilityThat screen name was created today, I'd guess with the express intent of flaming people until it gets banned. I think we should all help him with his objective and report his post to a WizO. :D

I can see that being a concern. However, you can't really coat a wooden item with metal, by D&D terms, there isn't really a way to do that. It would be a free ride if he used Shurikens, yes, but then, he still would have to take the time to recollect the pieces and put them together, etc.

And who was it being hostile? Did I miss something? If it was me, I hadn't intended it to sound hostile at all, I was just backing up my idea with proof.

Also, I wasn't totally sure if the bolts were mostly wood, either.

An arrow made entirely of Aurorum still breaks, and a magical item loses all magical properties when it is broken.

If you want to get rules-lawyery about it, Aurorum only says: "An aurorum weapon, shield, or suit of armor that has been sundered can be reformed...". Nobody sundered the arrow, so it wouldn't reform. That would just be silly, but then, most rules-lawyering is.

That's a very good point, actually, it wasn't sundered by D&D terms. But still, arrows can't be made of aurorum. How difficult would that be to fire from a bow?
