Kraleck 01-06-06, 05:59 AM	If your DM is using the automatic hit rule, does a weapon with a Crit. Threat range of 18-20 auto-hit on 18 and 19 or just 20? Feedback much appreciated.
Sae Cael Oanar 01-06-06, 06:57 AM	its not really a variant rule. its core. i mean you dm can choose not to play with it, but other than that. the rule is you always hit on 20 and always miss on 1.

StevenO 01-07-06, 12:53 AM	Auto hit with a natural 20 is standard rule. Expanded critical ranges still have to hit the target AC. Hit must then be confirmed (a second hit) to actually trigger a critical. The confusion comes from the DDMini skirmish game. In those simplified rules, any attack roll in the threat range is an automatic hit and critical. This is Not the case in the RPG.

DocBeard 01-07-06, 02:23 PM	If a 15 won't hit the target AC, it's not a threat to begin with, even if the weapon does threaten from 15-20. Natural 20s are the only automatic hits. Full stop.
Rulebook 01-07-06, 02:23 PM	okay, presuming we're talking about the normal rule, and not the auto-crit rule... if your threat range was 15-20, and you roll a 15 (totalling lets say... 24) and your opponents AC is (we'll say 25) you rolled a 24, his ac is 25. you dont hit. only a 20 auto hits
sirsolo 01-07-06, 06:03 PM	Well, it depends, do you mean will it automaticly hit a critical on 18-19-20, because thats a no, you need to beat the AC of the monster on a second roll, BUT If that fails, then (the way that I learned to play) It would hit the monster anyways, even if you didnt score a critical. Just ask your DM
sirsolo 01-07-06, 06:06 PM	Docbeard, I completly disagree with you, How would anybody without a +20 hit a dragon? But really, D&D all depends on your DM, there arn't actual rules, they're just guidlines.
DocBeard 01-07-06, 08:08 PM	I'm just saying, man, the way the rules are written, you only *automatically* hit when you roll a 20 (and you always miss if you roll a 1). Otherwise, whether you hit or not is determined by whether you beat your opponent's armor class or not. If you and your DM prefer a different set of rules, ain't nothing says you can't play that way.
