Axe question [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-07-05, 11:21 AM Recently one of my players was standing behind a door with his greataxe propped up next to the door and a throwing axe in his hand. After he threw the axe he grabbed his greataxe and ran through the door. I decided to allow him to do this seeing as he specifically placed his greataxe so he'd be able to do this. Should I allow this in future games?

10-07-05, 11:26 AM I would definitely allow it, as long as he took a Move Equivelent Action or greater to place his Axe, (and nothing else happened to it since that time).

I think even most strict DMs would allow it as well. (And definitely a loose, power, or anything Goes DM)

Picking up an item on the ground is a move action, but an item specifically place to be readily accessible in the specific circumstance could certainly be considered free (assuming, as Tarkin pointed out, an action was used to place it, rather than it just being dropped). There's no specific rule for it, but it's well within the purview of the DM.

Besides, he could just as easily have held the greatax in his off-hand and shifted his grip as a free action after throwing, anyway, or left it on his person and drawn it as part of the move action to enter the room.
