Grizzled Gryphon

Hello. everyone. Our party managed to acquire a Keelboat in the game. as it stands, we can sail the thing, but I am a little concerned that even a rowboat can outrun our whooping 1 MPH break-neck speed.

I know that there are magic items for ships out there, but where? I would assume there are ones in the Stormwrack book. Possibly in Arms and Equipment Guide, too.

Any help out there for our lowly boat?

I don't know much about the boating section of D7D, or the boating section of the real world, but I'm going to assume that a Keelboat has a sail. and if not, can be outfitted with one.

Spells. If you have a wizard, druid, or cleric that can cast 2nd level spells, you're set. I always knew Gust Of Wind had a useful purpose.

LOL. Well, the Keelboat, and several other nuatical forms of motivation, can be found in the Players Handbook.

I don't think the Gust of Wind spell is going to be all that useful. After all, it is only a 1 round duration spell, and it can't move anything beyond its range. I don't think anyone that sails would appreciate a 50 mph wind hitting there sail(s). I can only imagine that would not be a good thing.

This is probably covered in the Stormwrack book. Of all places, there ARE some things in Sandstorm. You know, the book about deserts? Well, they have some sand ships. I have that book, and will look through it to see what it says. Probably doesn't have anything useful, but we will see.

Hmm, I will have to check Frostburn, too. I don't recall anything in that book, but maybe there is some useful stuff in there, too.

I've got some info from Salt and Sea dogs (Kingdom of Kalamar).

Special quality augmentations:
Hull, Streamlined: Ships with a smooth, streamlined hull
increase their daily mileage and base sail speed by X2, as
well as increasing their maneuverability by one step. A
ship can only gain this special quality once. This special
quality cannot be combined with the strong frame or
extra-strong frame modifications. 30.000gp(salty heh?)
Sprinter: A ship with this special quality gains +10 ft. to its
base movement, though its daily mileage and maneuver ability remains unchanged. A ship can only gain this special quality once. 1.000gp

that is pretty salty. That would give us a whole 2 mph. That is a pretty low gain for 30,000 gp. But, I guess you take what you can get, huh?

Any other enchantsments for the Ship out there?

Old ships just didnt go fast, it's that simple..

Yes, boats from history didn't go fast. And people didn't wave there hands around, speak gibberish, and blow up dragons, either.

As this is D&D, there is magic. I have seen this magic used to improve ships in a variety of ways. I am just curious if anyone knows where that is.

Thanks for any help. Key word, help.

If you can get ahold of the airships book you can probably put an engine on the ship to atleast get it some speed.

stormwrack is an excellent book.

Hey, those airships in Eberron can go something like 20 miles per hour, can't they? I wonder if you can improve the speed of a surface ship without actually making it a flying ship?

Of course, I could just ask the DM to implement some Spelljammer ideas. I found a website with 3.0 or 3.5 conversions and ideas for spelljammer. Hmmm, making it a flying ship...

I guess that is the ultimate enchantment for a boat, isn't it?
However, that is a long way off, so I guess I need to get a hold of a copy of the Arms and Equipment guide and Stormwrack.

Thanks for all the help, everyone.

I've got the Arms & Equipment Guide, and it does have a magic item that would speed you up.

They're called wind-favored sails (40,500 gp). They set the wind speed to heavy (21-30 mph), regardless of the actual weather conditions, which will multiply your speed by 3. For a keelboat, that's a base speed of 30. That's just the lesser version. There's also a greater version (67,500 gp), which allows control over the actual wind direction (not just on the sails) within 600 feet. Might be useful if you have a small fleet, I guess.

There are other things, but none that will speed you up. Just stuff that will let you travel to other planes, travel on land, and, of course, fly. ;)

How about selling the keelboat and investing the money in some lovely, speedy rowboats? ;)
