Backpacking [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-18-07, 12:46 AM I'm making a second level character, and this just kind of came up. How much can all those mundane items in the PHB hold. For example, a backpack. I checked the entry, and nothing is there. Is there anywhere that lists the capacity of a regular backpack.

(The only thing i could find is that thing about less weight and size for small creatures)

07-18-07, 01:02 AM I'm sure like a real backpack it can vary depending on what you put in it.

It could hold 10 scroll tubes with negligible weight or 10 gold bricks that weigh a hundred or more pounds.

There probably isn't a hard rule on this for a reason.

07-18-07, 01:18 AM I also mean volume, i cant really picture what kind of pack we're looking at here, like a small backpack, or one of those big hiking packs. I would be inclined to think the hiking pack, but wouldnt that inhibit combat?

Unfortunately, it doesn't give you the information anywhere in the books, unless you're old school like me and my friends, and went back to 2nd ed. stuff until we could find out better info. I don't remember who the poster was, but somebody finally told me about this link, which gives all the info:

Short answer: a backpack holds 1 cubic foot, about 60 pounds. Before you ask, that's 60 x 50 = 3,000 coins.
