I was thinking of how to use a bag of holding and I had this idea: if a bag of holding is damaged, anything inside is destroyed. What about things that are only partially inside? For example, could you shove someone's head - or entire body - and rupture it, thus killing him and making the body unraisable by lower-level spells?

I do not think it would kill him. I believe it would just transport him to a random location on the Astral Plane. However, if he doesn't know how to get back it really doesn't matter does it? :D

I'd say give it a try. What is there to lose (besides 2500gp)?

For the last year I have had an emergency escape plan related to your idea. My characters always have a bag of holding, so if me and my party are ever in a truly hopeless situation depending on the DM I will either pierce the bag of holding with as many party members beside me as possible (if he rules the bad explodes in a 10ft radios), or I will crawl inside and puncture it (if he rules whatever is in the bag disappears). Hopefully I will be at a higher level by then, so I should be able to cast something like Plane **** to get myself back when my power Points return. If not I'll at least be alive, and have the potential to get back home later. Sadly I haven't had the chance to try out my theory yet. :pbbbtt:

The thing is, what happens to an object when only a part of it is in the bag when it's ruptured? I thought the part in the bag is lost... or at least transported, but without the rest of the object. For living organisms, as one can imagine, this could be... harmful.

correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought it worked a bit differently.
when a bag is damaged, assuming enough to overcome it's paltry Hardness and HP, from the outside, it's contents suddenly rush out or are "dumped" back into the real world w/ a sudden vacuum "pop" or rush.
internally, say, you don't sheath that magic sword you put in the bag and it punctures the Bag's lining from w/in...then, it's lost to the Astral i thought.
perhaps that is the function to the Portable Hole.
don't quote me on that.

we often used the super large ones to pile in a bunch of non-breathing combatants, say, undead in a Portable Hole, Teleport into a secure area, and release them. it's like some weird arcane APC or air cav really. quick deployment w/ no one the wiser.

I don't think so, at least the way it sounds in the SRD: "If the bag is overloaded, or if sharp objects pierce it (from inside or outside), the bag ruptures and is ruined. All contents are lost forever."

No, because he isn't inside unless his whole body is inside.

Also, "lost forever" is a DM fiat phrase. Could be "on the astral plane" or any other "out of reach" place. It clearly doesn't mean to limit the DM to "dead and not resurrectable."

That is what I thought as well. I always figured the stuff just landed somewhere on the Astral Plane, since that is what happens when you do the trick with the portable hole and a bag of holding.

You should probably bring this up with your DM, and have him make a ruling as to what happens in his campaigns. Does it just phase out of existence, or does it go somewhere like the Astral Plane? Once you know what would happen then you can try to make a clever strategy around it.

Don't forget the opening of the bag is 2ft so most characters wouldn't fit.

I dunno, if you catch them by surprise you could be able to pull it over them before they react (surprise round + win initiative, I suppose it would take grappling)
