Is this balanced as an exotic weapon?

Light chain: 1H exotic
Damage: Medium: 1d6 Bludgeoning Small: 1d4 Bludgeoning
Critical: x2
Special abilities: Reach, threatens out to 10', as a spiked chain, and may be used against adjacent foes.
May be used to trip.
May be sued to disarm.

Reach in a 1-handed weapon is probably a bad idea, if only because it doesn't exist anywhere else, presumably for some reason which escapes me.

Whip. But then again, the whip is usually very weak. This weapon seems balanced to me, maybe except for the onehandedness.

Basically, it's a small spiked chain, minus the spikes, at least stat wise. I was wondering if it's viable to use as a weapon (it represents a 10' length of light chain with a small wieght on the end.)

Ah, you mean the weapon from kill bill? Make it two-handed, any person who has wielded even relatively short lenghts of chain know they can't be used with one hand in that way.

The only real problem I see with it is that if it is blunt it is a superior weapon to spiked chain that is being used as its base. The spiked chain being a piercing weapon is a disadvantage for it because of game mechanics a blunt weapon is better. I would drop it down to d4 damage base to make it fair. Otherwise just use a small spiked chain, as it would be a one handed weapon for a medium creature, but would have a -2 to hit ;)

Why are blunt weapons so powerful they need their damage die reduced? The last time I checked they give you a minor advantage against zombies and skeletons, and you can crush things with them, but what more?

I see no problems with it.

But just for grins you might want to stop it from sueing people to disarm them.. ;)

A whip is a Ranged Attack and therefore doesn't threaten for AoOs.

This is the Whip Chain from Quint Monk II, yes? The idea is nice, but really if its a melee weapon like that it just call it a Rope Dart. A Whip Chain has no more reach than a Spear.

Balance-wise: You're better of testing it as-is before making any changes to it. See how it works in combat. It may be too good, or it may be okay.

Logic-wise: A length of chain long enough to give reach would be extremely difficult-to-impossible to whip around single-handed, you'd need a second hand to stabilize it. If you take away the reach advantage, it makes more sense for it to be one-handed. But this is logic - not balance. So definitely play-test it as-is. You can always change it later.

I guess it could be a bit like the two silver whips in Underworld, except they sucked. And would be very tricky to make. And can't do 1d6 damage.

Well, you can get a kusari-gama, which is like a light spiked chain with a kama on the end.

But, since you seem to want a gogo like weapon, the "Meteor hammer" has been done in dragon. Not sure which issue, it was the one with Shen Kung Fu Prestige classes.

Basically it's a two handed Exotic weapon which threatens at 15' 10' and 5'. You can finesse it.
The other version is a rope dart, which does piercing damage.

Actually, I'm just looking for stats for having a 10' section of light chain (as per PHB adventuring gear) manacled to a wrist. Used to be chained to a wall, but the guy managed to break out and uses the chains as crude weapons.
