Can the magical whip wielded by a Balor deal damage to armored opponents?

No.

The whip itself will not hurt, even if it is covered with metal bits. Huh.

On another note, can a balor's weapons be "saved", i.e. carried away from their previous owner before (s)he self destructs?

Can the magical whip wielded by a Balor deal damage to armored opponents? The Balor's whip does not appear to be a normal whip at all (see this thread (http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?p=3666531#post3666531)). It can entangle people, it's reach is not normal, and it is described as "a long, flexible weapon with many tails tipped with hooks, spikes, and balls. The weapon deals bludgeoning and slashing damage" (a normal whip doesn't do this)

It's very likely that the original creators would say to just use normal damage.

If the balor in question was summoned to the plane on which you fought it (by another balor's summon demon ability, for example), then no; his equipment would disappear with him. In any other case, I beleive the weapons would remain.

The Balor's weapons are listed as his special abilities.

Some take this to mean that when the balor goes away, so does the weapon.

It also means that if you somehow transform into a balor, you get his weapon.

As per the Balor's "Treasure" description, along with goods and coins and whatnot, it has a +1 Vorpal Greatsword and a +1 Flaming Whip, and if you read the description of the Death Throes, both are destroyed in the process. I'm thinking that if you can somehow disarm them BEFORE the Balor is destroyed, then the weapons would survive if you survive.

As for the whip's Entangle properties, I'd put it in the same category as a Barbazu's Infernal Wounding glaive: it's a special ability of the creature, not the weapon, so if you somehow gained the whip then all you'd have is a large-sized +1 Flaming Whip.

That's how I'd rule it, in any event.

I agree with everything here. In one novel I've read ( A forgotten Realms Novel), it mentioned that the whip's entanglement was due to the balor's telekinesis. Granted, this is not RAW, but it makes sense.

If you want to go off of what used to be true, in the past 2e maybe earlier if a person tried to wield a Balor's weapon they had to make a Fort save or Die. Also as the items were "part" of the Balor they went away with the Balor.

The one written case I know of was a BBEG summoned and entrapped a Balor on the Prime, since the Balor was still there so were it's weapons and I guess he made the save...

Can't recall where it was from I believe it was an old module.
