Well read it and find out. Barbed Spear Two-handed Exotic Weapon Damage: 1d6 + 2d4; see text Critical: x2/x3; see text Range: 0ft. Weight: 8 lbs. Type: Piercing/? Cost: 12GP Description: The Barbed Spear is a strange looking weapon, about the size of a normal spear. The last 10 inches of the shaft are ironbound and have small barbs attached. When an attack is made with the Barber Spear, the weilder thrusts it into the target and draws back quickly, tearing the flesh and inflicting greater damage. The first figure in the column is the damage of the normal attack, the second that of the tearing action. If the wielder does not have the Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Barbed Spear) feat, they can still attack with the spear with no penalties. However, the first attack uses the attack action, and the wielder must wait until their next turn to jerk back the spear and inflict the secondary damage. The target may attempt and attack of opportunity against the spears wielder while it remains in their body. The wielder can drop the spear to negate this attack. The attack of opportunity can also be a sunder attempt on the Barber Spear while it remains in their body, but they then take the spears secondary damage upon damaging it. If the impaled creature tries to move while the spear remains in their body, the attacked has two options: 1). Make opposed Strength checks; if the attacker wins then the impaled creature cannot move and takes 1d4 points of damage, if the attacker loses than the impaled creature can move freely, but takes the full 2d4 points of damage. If this option is taken, the attacker cannot make any attacks of opportunity against the formerly impaled creature that they would get from the previously impaled creatures movement this round. 2). The impaled creature can move freely, but takes the 2d4 points of damage. The attacker can make any attacks of opportunity that round, including any provoked by the movement of the formerly imapled creature. If the impaled creature takes any strenuous actions (that would cause a disabled creature to begin dying), they take 1d4 points of damage and remain impaled at the attackers choice. |
| dengarbountyhunter04-07-07, 01:55 PM | It's basically a Two-handed exotic weapon dealing 3d6 (in most conditions), critical 20/x3. I feel that it is too powerful, and it brings up lots of questions. Is the wielder holding the spear until his next round? Can the creature move? What if the creature is forcefully moved? How does it interact with flaming/shocking/frost properties? And so on, and so on... |
| draconic_swine04-07-07, 02:01 PM | Agreed that it's pretty powerful. You might want to check out the harpoon - it's in Frostburn, I think. That's also pretty powerful, but I think it essentially covers what you're wanting to do. In general, weapons that inflict additional damage upon being removed are quite powerful and have lots of room for abuse. |
| Fencerboy04-07-07, 02:31 PM | OK, I made some changes, see what you think now. I still need to know what type of damage the 2d4 would be... |
