Yeah... this is just kind of an idea some friends of mine and I came up with, along the same lines as spiked armor. Barbed weapons to an extra 1d4 damage on a succesful attack roll, however, a character can choose to negate the extra damage by leaving the weapon in the wound. Barbed weapons can be pierceing, or swords. Axes and maces cannot be barbed.:fight!: :dragon:

How exactly is a sword barbed? is it a stick with fish hooks on it?

About the only useful weapons with a "barbed" effect would be small piercing weapons. Like arrow and darts (maybe throwing daggers but thats even debateable)

Anything larger than that and your making a near useless weapon. There is a reason swords and the like have straight edged blades. Its inefficient to barb or serrate or flamburg* them

*i cannot remember the actual term for this but its basically a wavy "flamed" blade

there is a barbed dagger in complete adventurer i think. i believe it deals an extra 1 damage on a sneak attack. any more than that and you're getting overpowered.

oh, and it's "flamberge"

I can see +1d4 of damage, unless you choose to leave it in.

But that would of course have some more requirements:

1. That huge barb on the end you want - it applies a -1 penalty to hit.

2. Removing it takes effort. I would rule it counts as an attack, even though you do not have to roll an attack roll.

In effect you roll once to hit, getting normal damage this attack, then next attack you do 1d4 + magic + strength, but can't miss.

How to have your character use a barbed weapon:

Step #1: Pick your favorite weapon. I prefer the longsword.

Step #2: When asked to describe your character, mention that his weapon has wicked barbs running along the edge.

Step #3: While in combat, use the normal statistics for the weapon. Describe the barbs and either piercing or tearing.

This is the simplest method. Adding damage makes it so that nobody would willingly use a non-barbed weapon unless they cost an insane amount of gold to create that doesn't come close to equaling what the cost of making pointy spikes on a weapon's blade would be.

Stormwrack has a Harpoon (Pg. 107). I suppose I can't give the stats, but the way it works is the victim gets a reflex save to avoid having it lodged. They then have impaired movement (especially if the attacker opts to control the trailing rope). If they pull it out, it deals extra damage to them. I hope that was vague enough not to break any rules. :)
