I'm going to be playing a bard for an upcoming evil campaign and wanted to have him use an electric guitar but understanding the constraints of the setting opted to instead give him a gaudy and shiny acoustic guitar, which my DM agreed with.

We might use the bardic instrument rules in Complete Adventurer but within the context of those rules I'm really not sure how to classify a guitar as the closest instruments are the lute and mandolin. Anyone have any ideas for stats on a guitar (acoustic or electric) or even just a general opinion on how a guitar should be classified if we do go by the rules in CA?

I don't have my CA with me and I've never read the bard rules in it(I mean, come on, BARD? please!), so take this with a grain of salt. However I would advise that if it's your first time using these rules, take another similar instrument and use the exact stats. It's usually a bad idea to start altering stats and creating your own items before you've tried the rules as presented. I would suggest the lute as a reasonably close alternative.

The CA rules have a lot of different effects for different instruments. If I recall, they all seemed pretty balanced. So just grab an effect that sounds good to you and use that. (In other words, if the drum effects seems more in line with what you're picturing your bard to do, use the drum effects for your guitar.)

yes certian instruments will actully have a rang of effect or enhance the chances of certain spells working one of my favroites was making a prc that relied on what type of instrument you played and was very thrallheardish :D:D
