I want to add some enchantments to my main character's sheild, but I am unsure of the logistics. Currently he is carrying a +1 Spiked Shield of Bashing. What I would like to do is add the Flaming enchantment to it. Now I understand that Bashing is a Shield enchantment and not a Weapon enchantment so I figure I am probably going to have to add a generic +1 Weapon enhancement before I can add Flaming... or do I? Is the fact that the shield is already enchanted enough? If I do have to add a +1 Weapon enchantment to qualify, how does that react with the +1 to attack and damage given by the Bashing ability? Since the Bashing is on the Shield and the +1 Weapon enchantment would be on the Spikes, can I get +1 from both? Or am I basically going to have to shell out 2000 gold for an enchantment that won't have any effect (due to stacking) before I can get Flaming?

Shield spikes are enchanted separately, so first you need to make the spikes +1 and then you can add enhancements. The shield still deals damage as though it were two size categories larger, but the +1 to attack/damage does not stack (it used to "act as though" it were a +1 weapon, and now it actually is one).

I was afraid of that... Oh well, in the end I think it will be worth it though. Thanks for the quick reply!

Actually, with the revised FAQ I think you wouldn't really say that the spikes were enhanced separately themselves. It's just that the shield as a whole has separate weapon and armor enhancements. Bashing is an armor enhancement, which doesn't apply to the requirement of a +1 weapon enhancement that you need to add flaming.

(Previously, it had been ruled that the spikes and shield were even separate weapons, I believe. So you could enhance your shield as a bludgeoning weapon and separately enhance the spikes as a weapon. You attacked with one or the other. This was kind of dumb I think.)

Well, as long as the revised FAQ does not disagree with me.:D

A shield with spikes should not be usable to bash any longer, though, or only be able to bash as though it were a size smaller (using the rim, or attaching a corpse to the spikes, whatever).

I always thought(and always ruled) that a spiked shield is a completely seperate weapon from a normal shield, and that a shield had to be created as a spiked shield to begin with(thus a regular large shield could not be made into a large spiked shield later).

As such, I've always treated it as one weapon when it comes to enchantments(ie you have a +1 Spiked Shield of Bashing that's also a +1 Flaming weapon, not a +1 Shield of bashing with +1 Flaming spikes, if you understand the difference).

To that end, I've always ruled that the damage increase of the spikes and the bashing enchantment stack, however the enhancement bonus that quality grants when used to bash does not qualify it to be further enchanted as a weapon. You would have to enhance the shield or spiked shield as a weapon first(the weapon enhancement bonus overlaping with bonus provided by the bashing enhancement) seperately from the shield enhancement bonuses.
