06-13-07, 05:04 PM Ok I've played D&D a good while, but i just want to conferm something. how do you work an attack. I know Base Attack Bonus + d20 + (not sure if you add str mod or not). then damage is (dice for weapon) + (Your str mod?). Im so ashamed but I want to make sure of my facts, Im teaching a newb tonight and don't wanna trip up.

If you have access to a PHB or even an online SRD (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/home.html) then you can answer the question for yourself.

Short answer though:
Standard attack roll resolution: d20 + BAB + Strength bonus
Damage resolution: Damage dice + magical modifiers + strength bonus + damage modifiers (i.e. Power attack) + special effects (Flaming +1d6, for example).

06-13-07, 06:09 PM Well, you add your STR modifier only on Melee attack rolls (barring special circumstances, such as feats).

You add your DEX modifier only on Ranged attack rolls, unless you take the Weapon Finesse feat and are using appropriate weapons.

You add STR modifier (whether bonuses or penalties) on all melee damage rolls (x1.5 STR bonus when using both hands).

You add STR PENALTIES on all ranged damage rolls only if you are using a longbow, shortbow, or some kind of thrown weapon. You do not count any penalties when using a Crossbow of any sort.

You add STR BONUSES on ranged damage only if you are using a Composite longbow or Composite shortbow that has been SPECIALLY MADE to do more damage. See the entries for Composite Longbow and Shortbow in chapter 7: Equipment in the PHB. You also add STR bonuses on thrown weapon damage. You add no STR damage bonuses to any kind of crossbow, ever (there is a feat that allows DEX damage to crossbows, but I won't get into that).
