| Mr.Atheist11-29-05, 06:04 PM | Greetings all. I have a player that wants a hammer similar to the "obsidian-hammer" found in the Fable xbox game. If you've ever played with the hammer, you can see it has powerful swings with the ability to knock opponents back, but is so slow that fast enemies can tear at you while you wind up for a swing. The player that wants it plays an orc with very high STR DEX CON and CHA, while his WIS and INT are horrid (he's a lucky roller). He already hits a good bit of damage, and I'm not too worried about him doing and extra 2d10 or whatever it is instead of his d6 from a gnome-hooked-hammer. I want it to have some drawbacks though. Maybe a full-round to use? A minus to hit? Attack of oppertunity? Exotic weapon proficiency needed? I've been reading about Fullblades and Bastard swords a bit, and I'm wondering if anyone has an idea for this "Obisidian Hammer's" stats? Thanks in advance. |
| pres_man11-29-05, 06:10 PM | I believe there is a maul weapon (in CW?). Basically it is a hammer version of the dwarven waraxe. Just use the stats for a dwarven waraxe but change the damage to blundgeoning instead of slashing. |

Step 2) Change damage type from "slashing" to "bludgeoning." Step 3) Change the weapon's description from "it looks like a big-ass axe you use in two hands" to "it looks like a big-ass hammer you use in two hands." Step 4) Profit! (er . . . I mean, "hit things!") This has been "Yak's Guide to Instantly Making a Gigantic Hammer for your Campaign that Any Fighter Can Use (Martial Weapon)." |
| metamind11-29-05, 06:19 PM | you could base it on the War mace (see Complete Warrior) it imposes a -1 penalty to AC one round after its use |
| Mr.Atheist11-29-05, 06:23 PM | You're not thinking big enough. This is a slow, big hammer. If I just wanted a Greathammer, I would have changed the greataxe. |
| Yak of Darkness11-29-05, 06:33 PM | You're not thinking big enough. This is a slow, big hammer. If I just wanted a Greathammer, I would have changed the greataxe.Monkey Grip a large greathammer (or make a special large greathammer as an exotic weapon that already has the Monkey Grip feat built in for the wielder). Say the -2 attack penalty is from it being a slow and ungainly weapon. |
| FlameLover11-29-05, 07:37 PM | Base it on the Sugliin from Frostburn. two-handed, exotic, 2d8 damage, x2 crit, bludgeoning damage. Full-round action to make single attack. The feat "Obsidian Hammer Mastery" or whatever allows you to attack once with a Standard Action or get all your normal attacks with a Full-Attack. Since the Sugliin has reach this weapon is a little under-powered, you could boost the crit to x3 or 19-20/x2, raise damage to 2d10 or add a knock-back ability (maybe ability to Bull Rush while dealing weapons damage?). I'd recommend x3 crit since that's what the other hammers have. Add in Monkey Grip and you got it doing 3d8 although that's 3 feats and a -2 penalty on attack. I'd go with Power Attack instead myself since the average damage is only upped by +2.5 for the -2 penalty while PAing would give you a +4 damage for -2 on attack using a two-handed weapon. Hope that helped! |
| Mr.Atheist11-29-05, 07:55 PM | Yes, that helps lots, thanks! I'll add the knockback, use 2d12 damage, and a x3 critical . It'll take a full round to swing (no feat to circumvent that), a -2 to attack, and to make it a little more balanced I may make it that after attacks you are considered flatfooted until your next turn (considering you're busy hefting the hammer up for the next swing). I think that almost makes up for the damage done by the hammer. Oh, and of course it requires EWP, and powerful build can eliminate that -2. :D Any suggestions are still welcome. Summary Large Hammer Exotic Two-Handed Melee Weapon Attack -2 Damage 2d12 Critical x3 Type Bludgeoning Special Hefty Takes a full round to swing, and you are considered flatfooted (denied dex-bonus to ac and can be sneak-attacked) until your next turn. Knockback (homebrew variant) The attacked rolls a fortitude save against your damage dealt. If you fail, nothing happens. If they fail, they are knocked back 5 feet, and an additional 5 feet for every 10 they fail the check by. |
| baalzamon99911-29-05, 08:00 PM | I guess a crit of 8d12 is okay... |
| Silverthumb12811-29-05, 08:22 PM | What's wrong with a Greatclub(has the exact same stats as the maul, BTW)? Just say "Yeah, I totally used the Greatclub's stats, just that it looks like a hammer, not a club LoLZ!" Oooooooor... Races of Stone has a Greathammer(OMFG!). There ya go. Just drop the name "Goliath" from "Goliath Greathsmmer" and your set. Or, go by the rules for Longsword to Greatsword. Just up the damage by one step, and call it Greathammer(basically the same damage as the Goliath Greathammer). |
| Azezel11-29-05, 08:29 PM | Just looking at the title of your thread... Is the Bastard Hammer anything like the Witch Hammer, because I don't have a problem with witches but I think I could find work for a Bastard Hammer (Malleus Notheus?) |

| T.R.I.P.11-30-05, 02:46 AM | An example for the weapon could be the warmace from complete warior. This is a one handed exotic weapon ands deals 1d12 damage. The downside is that you take a -1 penalty on ac because it's more difficult te defend yourself. |
| Mr.Atheist11-30-05, 07:07 AM | I guess no one read my earlier post, I DON'T WANT A GREATAXE WITH SLIGHTLY MODIFIED STATS! I think I got what I need from FlameLover, and if i had complete warrior i'd look it up, but i do not. Thanks for the help, anyway. |
