No no.. if you really want to cheese a player off, make it a Thinaun Vorpal weapon (Thinaun is a special material found in Complete Warrior), then have the bad guy escape after the first PC fatality.

And make him also use a short sword, with perfect two weapon fighting. Also Vorpal/Thinuan. If all the attacks hit, in 20 rounds you should have one killed and captured. It might work in 10 rounds.

Did I mention the various feats and classes that give re-rolls yet? And Action points? Because those make vorpal weapon fighting so much easier.

Vorpal swords and say a demon with 6 appendixes? :D

Should give a pause for even the hardiest of veterans.

A monster with 6 limbs, 6 vorpal short swords, 6 dancing vorpal short swords, and the multiweapon fighting feat. And maybe improved and greater multiweapon fighting, which are house ruled. Because then people are going to start worrying. Naturally, they are all thinuan, and there is a portal nearby, that throws them to another demon, who teleports somewhere to hide them. Maybe a couple illusory monsters when your at it, and give the monster a couple rogue levels. Also, is it possible to make thinuan vorpal teeth for say a 12 headed hydra or three to guard the other mosnter? Granted, this only works once, because then people start to get happy with fortification armor, and flying around for sneak attack and melee attacks, while summoning elementals and golems to do the actual fighting.

If you want to be a real bastard:
+1 distance shot returning throwing triple-throw vorpal bastard sword (+20 bastard sword)
Throw it at anything you can see, and it will attack it three times and come back to you. If you are willing to make a +26 bastard sword, you could add Unerring Accuracy to remove cover and concealment miss chances.
If you instead want to lower the cost, the Distance Shot, Throw Anything and Uncanny Accuracy feats can replace the distance, throwing and uncanny accuracy properties. However, if the throwing property comes off, you need to switch to an actual ranged slashing weapon (either the dagger or the throwing axe).

If some madman decides to create and add an instant returning ability, you could then make a full attack with the stupid thing. While hasted. With Manyshot. That's 18 5% chances to insta-kill per round. Tyr only knows what horrors await if you were to look for weapon properties outside the SRD; I certainly lack the courage to try.

Lastly: a monk always gets more attacks than a fighter thanks to Flurry of Blows, and the sai is a special monk weapon that deals slashing damage. A 24th-level monk can take Vorpal Strike, but a 9th-level monk can afford a vorpal weapon.30th-level Human Monk
1) Combat Reflexes, Improved Unarmed StrikeB, Stunning FistB, Two-Weapon Fighting
2) Deflect ArrowsB
3) Power Attack
6) Improved TripB, Cleave
9) Improved Two-Weapon Fighting
12) Improved Critical (unarmed strike)
15) Greater Two-Weapon Fighting
18) Great Cleave
21) Keen Strike
24) Perfect Two-Weapon Fighting
25) Vorpal StrikeB
27) Exceptional Deflection
30) Improved Ki Strike, Infinite DeflectionB

Str 25, Dex 25, Wis 25
base attack routine: +23/+23/+23/+23/+18/+18/+13/+13/+8/+8/+3/+3 plus Strength modifier (min +7), extra attacks through cleaving. Unarmed strikes are adamantine, epic magic, keen, lawful, and vorpal.

I was just thinking of making such a weapon, a nice low-level Souldrinking, Marrowcrushing, Wounding weapon for level/Con damage and Temp HP/Str enhancers..

..I've been playing too much Soul Calibur. "Souls, come unto me!" XD

Quick question...do you use the death from massive damage rule (i.e. DC15 Fort save or die if you take more than 50 hp on one hit)?

If so, then vorpal is the most useless enhancement in the game.

Think about it...what vorpal gives you is a 5% chance of an instant kill. And it costs you a +5 weapon enchantment.

But any time you do 50 hp of damage in one hit, the opponent must make a DC15 Fort save or die. Fine, they all have great saving throws...but a natural 1 always fails...which means you have a 5% chance of an instant kill any time you do 50 hp of damage.

By the time you can afford a +5 weapon enchantment, you had doggone better be doing 50 hp of damage per hit anyway.

Basically at higher levels, everyone automatically has a vorpal (i.e. a weapon with a 5% chance of an instant kill) weapon. Spend your money elsewhere.

Which is probably why the massive damage rule is so rarely used.

It basically guarantees that players will be killed off in most high level encounters.

Given that fact (and the result that the variant rule is not used a lot), Vorpal is a reasonably good deal. Not the best use of your money, but not a bad one.

I do use massive damage.
I don't like vorpal.
