Battle Grids [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-28-06, 11:57 PM I'm looking for a large grid map to use while playing. Preferably a traditional square grid is best. I've only been able to find a few online and was wondering if maybe you guys had any suggestions? A larger mat is best, 3x3 is fine but 4x6 is better and being Dry erasable is a must.

03-01-06, 03:25 AM It's far cheaper to make your own, I find. All you need is a piece of paper the size you want (I suggest at least 2 feet by 2 feet, but more is better to a point), a ruler, pencil to make the first lines and marker to bolden them, and someone to laminate them :p

We did 1 inch by 1 inch squares in the grid, works out well.

03-01-06, 05:08 AM I made one the same, but i used some grid paper from a stationary shop, it made ruling the lines easier. I also stuck it to a piece of MDF so we can flip it over at dinner time and have a bigger coffee table.

03-01-06, 01:00 PM kinkos is your friend. we got 4 5'x3' laminated mats a few years ago from them.

but we find that using a battlemap is impeding our game, so we discarded the map in favor of using the bare floor with props for the various terrain (playing cards make good streams of water, etc...) and a tailors tape measure to gauge distances. we've also made cutouts of spell effects (bursts, lines, cones, etc) for ease of use.

I would like to second this. My group purchased a set and loves them. Makes the battlefield very customizable.

03-01-06, 05:09 PM Or you could use the grid that comes with the DMG (or darken a few sheets of graph paper) and lay a 99 cent sheet of acetate over it. You can buy it at any craft/office supply/stationery store by the foot. Dry erase wipes right off, though you have to use a wet cloth every couple of games to get all the ink off (it starts to spread evenly, not enough to interfere, but enough to tint the mat underneath a few shades towards grey, which I don't like).
