How can a melee character fight against an ethereal creature so that he can ensure that he won't miss when he attacks? Are there any spells that a cleric can cast to help out the melee character? Or maybe some arcane scrolls that a rogue can use to help him out?

Ethereal Jaunt allows a creature to become ethereal for a time. That should allow you to hit ethereal creatures normally.

A Ghost Touch weapon hits ethereal creatures just as well as it hits any other creatures. (No miss chance due to etherealness)

Magic weapons of +1 enhancement bonus or higher have a 50% chance of hitting ethereal creatures.

I thought Ghost Touch only works on incorporeal creatures, not ethereal creatures?

Ethereal Jaunt only brings the cleric into the Ethereal Plane, so that's no good for the melee guy :/

are we talking ethereal or incorporeal?

If ethereal there isn't that many options.

If its incorporeal then the Cleric spell Ghost Trap (6th 1min/lvl) has a Cl*5 ft radius of effect that causes incorporeal creatures to become corporeal. (minimum 55 ft radius)

Besides ethereal creatures cant attack creatures on the material plane unless the manifest and become material.

Ethereal. But I think I must've misunderstood something when I read the description of an ethereal creature earlier, because now I'm seeing that ethereal creatures can't attack creatures on the material plane, except for force spells. Is this correct, or can they use magic and harm creatures on the material plane even if they're not force spells?

Close but still off

Ethereal can Only effect ethereal

Ethereal + anything = ethereal

Material can only effect ethereal through force

Material + Force (or transdimentional metamagic) = affecting ethereal

in theory a transdimentional spell from te thereal plane might effect the material i need go look at the feat.

Well, either way, it looks like it's better (or the same) if we're on the material plane going against a creature in the ethereal. I was concerned coz an upcoming enemy will be riding a Nightmare, which can go ethereal at will. I didn't want to get into a situation where it can always hit us, and we'll only have a 50% chance of hitting it.

Spells modified by the Transdimensional Spell feat can hurt creatures on the Ethereal plane By extension, many DMs rule than an Ethereal creature can use Transdimensional Spells to attack creatures on the Prime Material Plane, from the Ethereal.

how 'bout a force weapon from Arms and Equipment guide but you may not use that since it's outdated

Where can I find the Transdimensional Spell feat?

It's in both the Complete Divine and Complete Arcane. It's very good. I use it all the time so ghost casters can deliver those pesky touch spells like Bestow Curse.

Ghost cleric with Extra Turning, Transdimensional Spell, and Divine Metamagic (Transdimensional)...some of my friends still hold that encounter against me...
