Hi, I'm playing in a Sharn Superheroes campaign and am trying to come up with my characters signature item. The character is a gnome with the dark template (Tome of Magic) Beguiler (PHBII) Shadowcraft Mage (Races of Stone), we are currently level 14. The character, Dusk, relies mostly on hide in plain sight (ability from the dark template) with his +30 hide check (maxed hide, small size, bonus from dark template, etc.) to get the Beguilers Cloaked Casting +1 to his DCs. I'm trying to create his ultimate magic item, as the DM is allowing us the freedom to create magic items. Right now he has a +2 mithril Shirt with shadow and a +5 Cloak of Resistance with Disguise Self also on it. The DM is being very cool with letting me add multiple effects to items, as it is all about the flavor of the character. So, what would you give to the character. I've got 20K to spend and enough time to make it?

Ring of Blinding color surge

Spell level 2
Caster level 5
2*5*2,000= 20,000

fits your budget and gives him a way of blinding a target and going invisible at the same time. the cost above is for a use activated item. if you add a command word requirement drop 2000 off the price. point yer ring at em and whamo... they get blinded you go invisible.. sound sperfect to me...

now for the super-dependant-on-dm-aproval-ring-of-uberness

using tyhe ring above as a base item we do a few things to make it a little prettier.

firstw e change it from use activated to command word. item price is now spell level*caster level*1,800. ok so this puts the base cost of our new ring at 18000, not bad eh? ok lets shave off a little more. lets make the ring only usable by a person with level sin the beguiler class. That cuts the cost by 30% so that makes our ring cost:17400, i know that isnt much but lets see what we can tos sinto the item for 2,600 gold ok?

Obscruing mist as cast by a first level wizard..... gives you concealment when 5 feetf rom peoples.. so this could be used to hide as necesary when found in the middle of the fray. cost to add: spell level 1*caster level 1* 1800= 1800

Now our ring of uberness.. can cast blinding color surge when the character says : BLIND!
Or can create a cloud of fog for 1 min when the character says FOG!

now we still have 800 gold pieces to render here if ya want.. what else coudl we possibly do with this amount?

how about a bonus to the two skills this beguiler seems to be using quite often? a +2 to hide costing 2 squared times 100 or 400, and a bonus to move silently for the same cost?

ok that puts us solidly at 20,000 for a "Beguilers Ring" as I will call it.

Beguilers Ring

This band of simple metal has a slightly dull black tint to it, it seems dirty but can not be cleaned, and also has an oily luminescence over its surface.[dull and shiny.. got to love it..]
At will, a character can activate one of two abilities using the proper command word.
BLIND!: enacts the effect of a blinding color surge as cast by a fifth level caster
FOG! : enacts an obscuring mist spell as if cast by a first level caster.

Furthe rmore while the ring is worn the beare gains a +2 to both his hide skill and his move silently skill.

This ring is highly prized among many beguilers for its usefulness, and practicality intheir profession.

---------------------------------------------------

I think i did all my math right on that, it may cost slightly more due to multiple similar abilities, if so drop the caste rlevel on blinding color surge a bit to make up for it. hope that gives you som eideas for your super cool item.

Uh... 18,000 cut by 30% is going to make it 12,000, not 17,400.

I think you did your multiplication wrong there, and somehow got 30% of 18,000 being 600 rather than 6,000.

Personally, I don't reduce prices for restrictions. It's cheesy. A Ring of Wizardry only usable by humans is the same as a regular one in the hands of a Human wizard. If you want one, fine, but don't expect a price reduction.
