It kind of sucks that it is a move action to put a wand away. The idea struck me that you could put the wand on a chain attached to your belt. That way you could drop it as a free action but it wouldn't fall on the ground to be stepped on, picked up by enemies, or forgotten and lost if you forget to specifically tell the DM that you pick up your wand again.

This is obviously sort of a cheesy idea, but is there any rules based reason why it shouldn't work?

Well, as a mundane item (IE, no magic, simple chains only), it would haver the desired effect, though the chains would be 2-3 feet long on a medium character (belt to wrist when arm is extended), and might dangle awkwardly (inhibiting movement such as tumbling, offering opponents a grapple bonus against you).

It's a nice idea, but I can see many drawbacks.

However, with magic I can see another option. First, sorry, no chains.
Belt of Wand Retrieval
> The belt has, say, 8 wand holsters.
> If a wand is placed in a holster, and left there for an hour (or 24 hours if you want to be restrictive), that wand becomes attuned to that holster. Multiple wands can be attuned to the belt simultaneously.
> Wands attuned to the belt must be drawn normally (move action or free action with Quickdraw).
> If the wand is removed from the belt and dropped (or otherwise is unattended at the end of the belt-wearer's turn), then it returns to it's holster on the belt at the beginning of the belt-wearer's next turn.
> If the wand is attended, by anyone other than the belt wearer, then the creature must make a DC 20 will save to keep the item from returning to the belt at the beginning of the belt-wearer's next turn.
> Unattuning a holster would happen when the wand runs out of charges, if the wearer removes the wand and holds it for 1 hour or more, three consecutive successful saves to prevent the wand from returning to the belt, or if the wand is removed while no one wears the belt.

This item shouldn't be more than a minor magic item, considering the best feature is retrieving a stolen wand. Say, 5,000 Gp and faint conjuration?

Drawmij's instant summons comes to mind, however both it and teleport object, are level 7 spells, and such a minor item would make little sense attached to a spell higher than level 3.

And what would happen if another wand is placed in the holster while one is being used? If all holsters aren't occupied, then I guess the wand could return to another one, however this would disrupt the organization of the belt (assuming the spellcaster generally has a specific place for each wand and that they are sufficiently similar). I guess a new (unattuned) wand would end up on the ground to make way for a returning one if the rest of the holsters were occupied. Hmm.

Nope. Although I'd suggest using twine or yarn.

Nope. Although I'd suggest using twine or yarn.

Also, if you want to keep your belt slot, use up the "vest" body slot on a "wandolier". This is what my PC does (fighter/rogue with maxed UMD). He owns about 10 different wands and all are tied to the wandolier with leather strips.

Your looking for the Wand Bracelet pg147 in the magic item compendium.

I agree with the chain Idea. If a wizard wants to keep his favorite wand on a nonmagical lanyard, I'd let him draw that one as a free action and drop it just the same. Inless you are a rogue with UMD, tumbling isn't your first concern anyway. And a wizards grapple can't really get worse. If the Player tried to abuse it by having 10 wands, then he is back to a move action to find the right one but he can still drop them for free. Its a fair trade off for taking up a belt slot, even if its a nonmagical item.

Well the belt of wands sounds good, however I agree that putting them on chains or even rope or twine it would dangle and cause alot of little problems; not to mention that if the DM is strict all those magical wands banging about and hitting each other could have a devastating effect if they were to crack or break. Really why would you be putting a wand away unless you were gonna draw another weapon or use another wand. I mean if you think about it a wand is made for quick casting and used as either a quick-kill or an alternative to casting regular spells. Would you really need to cast a single spell with your wand and then put it away, I would figure you would go to town on whatever your fighting using your wand, or at least disable your opponent giving you time to put your wand away. If anything hire a goblin carrier. You know a goblin who follows you and acts like a living pack, and carrier. Then you can say, "Wand of missiles", and he will look at you in confusion then hands you a wand, hopefully the right one. LoL so maybe you could try that. In any case I think putting a wand away shouldn't be so bad.
