What are your ideas on the best possible legit armor for a rogue/wizard Xclass?

Bracers of armor. In the core, at least, it's the only "armor" you can wear (mithral included) that won't give you a spell failure chance.

Also, if you're not two-weapon fighting, a mithral buckler would work splendidly (you can wear one when TWF and use the Improved Buckler Defense feat to get your shield bonus, but it is one more penalty to your attack rolls to deal with). No armor check penalty for your rogue skills, and no spell failure for your wizard spells.

Some of the splatbooks (I'm thinking Book of Exalted Deeds here) have some kind of other special materials/enchantments that lower arcane spell failure chance, and I'm sure someone who has them will post with better reccomendations than what I can give you. :D

Mithril Chain Shirt.
Bracers of Armor are stupidly expensive, and entirely not worth it (you're paying magical plus prices for every point, whereas normal armor is basically free).

I have a sorceress that uses a mithril chain shirt. It has 10% ASF (had MW leather before that, same 10% ASF). I've played her for 2 years now, and have lost a grand total of 3 spells to ASF.

What would you rather have, 10% ASF and +4 to AC for a thousand gold, or 0% ASF and +4 AC for 16,000 gold?
And, if your DM allows stuff from the Book of Exalted Deeds, there's always the Twilight enchantment, +1, that drops the ASF by 10%, which means a mithril shirt goes down to 0%.

And its still cheaper than BoA.

Mage Armor.
Later: Empowered Mage Armor.
A lot later: Bracers (+8) of Armor or Mithral Chain Shirt +5 (Your most important spells should still be stilled)

Later: Empowered Mage Armor.Um... Mage Armor has no variable effects. Empower wouldn't do anything to it.

I can understand the sorcererss, but surely a wizard would be better to just memorise mage armour? 1 hour per level stacks up pretty fast, and it has no ASF and no check penalty. It also works against incorporeal, though most of the time that's not a big issue.

Mithral Chain Shirt with the Twilight ability (Book of Exalted Deeds, -10% ASF).
Also Complete Arcane has Greater Mage Armor (+6 AC bonus, 25gp Material Component).

Um... Mage Armor has no variable effects. Empower wouldn't do anything to it.

I dont see, what's the diffrence between +4 and 0d6+4. I think the stress lies on variable numeric effect.

wrong. the emphasis is on the variable.

The entire reason tehy made the stat boosting spells a set value instead of 1d4+1 is to prevent people from empowering them.
